Similar to how Floyd Mayweather Jr was booed when he fought Carlos Baldomir for a poor fight, was Pernell Whitaker ever subjected to the same thing?
i never had the houner to see him live but any fight of his i ever watched i never heard boos infact the only time i ever heard boos was when he got robbed against chavez
It makes you wonder, because how would you picture a whitaker vs baldomir bout playing out:think No, i watched several of his fights and never heard him booed because of his style, but because of his opponent (JCC and Hoya fanatics).
he would probably run a way more often . I dont think he had the training and discipline to stand in the pocket and deliver crisp shots like that of Mayweather. He would probably have to clown more to frustrate Baldomir.
:-( Pea outclassed a bigger and better Argentinian in Julio Cesar Vasquez when he moved up and raided his title at 154. When he was getting to the end of his career and fading quicker because of the coke. He would dominate Baldo just as badly if not worse than Mayweather did at any stage of his career. Even the Tito version would beat him. To suggest anything else is laughable.
Sweet Pea was better defensive & better offensively than Floyd Mayweather. Baldomir would get dealt with in the same fashion. 120-108 scores all-round.
I wouldn't say outclass, but the point you made is that he clearly beat a bigger, far better version of Baldomir. Whitaker was as good as it gets in the pocket as well. Mayweather used his feet to get out of the way more often than Whitaker. As for the topic of the thread, I can't remember seeing a fight of his where he was ever booed after it.
He never was, which is why it's easy to get annoyed when the fanatical members of the Church of Pea spout on about how underrated and underappreciated he is/was.
He beat him clearly but did have trouble. I thought he ran away with it later even though he looked almost disinterested form memory. But Vasquez's strength, jab and rough housing made it pretty hard overall. I orginally wrote "totally outclassed", which would have been off the mark but he I still think he showed he was the superior fighter. He bounced a ton of clean shots of Julio's head.
Without a doubt. I just meant that Vasquez was competitive enough for me not to consider it him being outclassed, but overall agreeing with your point.
I don't know my exact score, I'd guess something like 8-4 based on memory, but I'd have to watch it again to be sure. I don't remember it being one of his completely dominant displays. Vasquez made it difficult by memory. A clear win for sure, but not something I would personally consider outclassing.
I don't remember the specific fights, but he has been booed. Mainly, for the clowning around. He was ahead of his time with his style. I believe PBF was a tad better offensively, but not defensively.
