I was arguing with a friend about Floyd's dullness in the ring the other day. He is still upset about the last $50 bucks he spent to watch what he calls "a sparring session". He basically feels that Floyd is a pu$$y who is deathly afraid of getting caught in an exchange. I however feel that Floyd is a defensive genius who is unappreciated by today's bloodthirsty "i want it now" generation. He responded by saying "nah, Sweat Pea was a genius, and he still exchanged with his opponents". I responded with, "it isn't Floyd's fault that he has not faced a fighter that was able to take him there." It isn't Floyd's fault that his Chavez does not exist. It isn't his fault that with the exception of Castillo 1, everyone he's faced was not up to the job. We can make an argument that Cotto poses that challange to him, but it is irrelevant until they meet. Boxing is the business of hitting and not getting hit. Like B-Hop (another master), Floyd has simply mastered a style that only purists can appreciate. If it were 50 or 70 yrs. ago we'd be hearing stories of how he won a round once without throwing a punch, ala Pep. Floyd's fights are sometimes boring, but is it really his fault? Any thoughts fellas?
Yes it's his fault, he could throw more if he wanted to, take more chances, but his priorities are more defensive minded in the ring. Especially if the opponents are so inferior to him surely he could do what ever he wants with them. However, I don't think he's boring at all, I really admire Floyd and enjoy watching his fights. But for the "bloodthirsty" fans I understand where they are coming from. But this is boxing and Floyd is a master of boxing.
Ok, but part of the mastery is also knowing what gives your opponent the opportunity to hit you. And what gives them that opportunity is opening up for an exchange, which is why he pop shots. He knows not to exchange, maybe because he knows something we don't know, like the fact that his chin is probably made of glass. So he knows to protect that chin to the fullest, which manifests itself in a defense first fighting style.
I agree that some fights have not been the most exciting (PBF vs DLH) but Floyd fights to win and i dont think a KO matters to him as long as he wins. He is a fighter who has major problems with hands so i think he limits his punches to preserve his hands.
I really enjoyed Floyd-Oscar. I do feel that if a fighter has a style that is ugly or unexciting but affective it's not his job to fix it - he needs to be taken out of that zone. Of course you do get fighters (Marquez) that alter their style for partly commercial reasons.
Mayweather actually has a good chin. He has been hit cleanly by many fighters from Castillo, Judah, DLH, Hatton and took it all in stride. He has had problems with his hands since Castillo. They resurfaced when he fought Judah. Which is why he developed a more pot shot style which started when he fought Baldomir. It could be a case that his doctor might have told him to watch out with his hands or he could develop some serious problems down the road. If people want PBF to exchange the opponent is going to have to force PBF in a situation where he is going to have to exchange. They could start by winning the fight to the point where Mayweather feels desperate.
I don't think people would complain about floyds safety first style if he was fighting the best possible competition. When fighting over-matched opponents (with better ones available) and STILL pot-shotting your way to victory with 15 punch a round average, I think the paying public and fans have a right to moan. His style would make sense if he was in the ring with someone who honestly posed a threat, or at least someone his own size.
Look man I dont talk **** about Floyd but for most of us boxing fans his style is hard to watch. Im def glad I always stream his fights cause they arent worth $50. Some people would pay $80 to go see a football game and others would pay the same for a golf game, I would choose the football game anyday. To me Floyd is like the Golf game I just cant enjoy it.
My 2 favourite things in boxing are epic wars (as long as they are good technicians, I detest sloppyness) & pure boxing art. Mayweather provides the latter so yes, I enjoy watching him fight very much & Im glad he`s back in boxing.
Apparently, it is. He should forget all that he's learnt in the sport and go to the Antonio Margarito school of boxing and let people use his head as a heavybag. He should also lose once in a while because it's not fair to everybody else.
No but he could take a little more risks specially against some of the overmatched fighters he has faced,Potshoting and thowing 15 punches a round against someone like say Baldomir who doesnt have a chance in hell is boring.
