Bloody hell, didn't think Darreners could get the internet! You don't train at Dezzi Higginsons gym in Darwen by any chance do you ? Some good lads down there.

Ha Ha, I'm a runner who is into watching boxing pal I do know some of the lads down at Dezzi's Gym. My brother has somthing to do with the gym (not sure what, think he sponsors it or used too) I did have a go at boxing a few years back training with the late Trevor Thompson and his lad gary. I gave it up people kept hitting me:nut. I'm into fell running/racing now, much easier sport than boxing. Seriously though lads the pool running is fantastic for keeping fitness whilst injured, I have literally crawled out of the pool after an instructor led session. Cheers
Jonno, Have a go at www.myfitnesspal.com for losing weight, I dropped a stone in 2 months from 13 stone to 12, it really makes you think about what your eating. Basically you just pop your daily food into it and try to keep below your calorie goal for you weight.
Assuming the pool is 25metres (as most pools are these days - YOU'LL KNOW IF ITS OLYMPIC SIZED). 150 metres warm up. Try and build up to a decent pace after the first 100m (4 lengths) 2 minute rest 100m x 5 - Try and use a wall clock (most pools have them). Go for 30 seconds rest after the first, 25 sec after the second, 20 after the third, and 15 after the fourth. 2 minute rest 1 x 200m - Do this as 2 x 100m, in the first 100m try and extend your stroke, really work your core, on the 2nd 100m try and take breaths on your 7th stroke instead of third. Have a 2 minute rest then push out a 400m relaxed swim. Same again, really try and extend your stroke, work your core. If you can get any paddles to put on your hands then USE THEM. Creates twice the drag and will really work your arms more then normal swim. Standing in the deep end and doing shadow boxing under the water is superb and allows your to slow down your punches and really focus on the movement and correct punching form HOWEVER........ Chances are you wont have the pool to yourself and will not only look a prized prat, but will probably be accused of perving underwater, and will not be invited back to the leisure centre again
Try using those weights that go around your ankles and wrists. You can not beat a proper swim for getting your stamina up and helps breathig. I prefer breast stoke myself hate front crawl as I nomaly end up with ear infections if I dont wear a cap and cant breath right if i've no nose clip on. There was a pool in Bilston I used when I lived in Darlaston, back in my school days. brilliant sized pool think it was olympic size with the proper diving boards.
after all the possitives, angelo dundee did say that swimmer muscles are too dense or heavy than a boxers frame when he had russell crowe in cinderella man
UNIQUE...You did not mention the nature of your injury so I will keep to just one point....99% of people do not know the correct way to swim...get an instructor...he/she will correct faults by showing you the positive way to use your stokes, breathing, arm and leg movement.....you will be pleasantly surprised how good you can get....good luck.
Thanks mate. I will take that advice and seek an instructor. I did a few lengths today and was blowing out of my arse! I have only pulled a muscle in my leg so not a major problem. I am boxing soon though so need to stay active until the leg has healed and I can start running again. P.S I started the programme recommended previously but had to stop after the warm up as I was to ****ed to carry on!
The other thing nobody has mentioned so far is trying to swim without getting wet. I know Brother Nazim used to have Shane Mosley work on that in camp.
In fairness to Dundee he is one of the first to admit that he wasn't a real hands-on coach. He was a fine-tuner, and a strategist, not to mention one hell of a cornerman. But if you read his book, he talks at length about how most of his fighters day to day training was carried out by coaches, not him. He joined camps for the last couple of weeks to prepare the gameplan. Not a slur on the great man, his results speak for themselves, and the knowledge gained from having 1000s of fighters walk through his gym was invaluable, but he was a far cry from your modern scientific S&C guys who talk muscle fibres and protein synthesis rather than bodyshots and footwork.
