Hello all I have been swimming laps in order to help my boxing cardio. Does anyone have any advice on how to swim for boxing?? I know the Klitschko bros do Alot of swimming, so I would like to know more.
The problem with swimming a lot is that you may loose hand speed. It develops different muscle types. Look at bodies of swimmers and boxers, there are quite some differences. You gotta compensate that somehow. Yea, for cardio it is quite ok, also helps avoid knee problems from running
why would you loose hand speed? its not that you are lifting something or that your muscles are getting heavier. even some boxers are shadow boxing in pool because of water resistance to improve their hand speed.. (i think its james toney but not sure, too lazy to search ) swimming is great to improve cardio and it also strengthens whole body try pyramid tehnic: 400m any tempo 200m (25m sprint, 25m any tempo and style, its like rest) 100m fastest you can 200m same as 200 above 400m same as 400 above
You're not gonna lose hand speed but it's about as un-sports specific as you can get, it's not going to do much at all for your boxing fitness.
Former champion, Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz, never ran, he was on the stairmaster and in the swimming pool. It worked for him, but is it for everybody, that I can't say. Diaz never had a hand speed, or stamina problem.
Yes this is good one exercise, because in swimming you do exercise of how to swim and you make good exercise for of your hand practice....
I've seen a picture of Klitschko shadow boxing under water. Swimming is an all-round body workout and really helps your breathing technique. A lot of boxers swim for their training. Amir Khan, Juan Diaz, Klitschkos, Pacquiao tried it...
Running in water is good, but make sure everything is submerged. We use to wear Snorkels, strapped to the forehead, to stop damaging the upper vertabrae.
Not really at all... If you can't see that running is more specific to boxing than swimming is then I don't know what to tell you. If boxing is 100 then running is 75, Swimming would be 15. Running is impact and you contract a lot of muscle, a lot of the same muscles used in boxing. If you get fit running there will be a lot of transfer to boxing. Not with swimming. Swimming is good for recovery and aiding breathing but it's not going to get you in any sort of shape for boxing. Cycling would be far better than swimming as well, not as good as running as you're not on your feet and you don't contract as much muscle (so VO2 will be lower) but still far more beneficial then swimming.
I wonder how much it affects your breathing technique, oxygen deprivation and lung capacity for boxing. I've heard of chronic asthmatics turn to champion swimmers because of training in the pool. Either way, having been casual surfing a swimming since I a kid I wouldn't swap it for running unless you have concrete evidence and dedicated plan.
