Is swimming a better substitute for cardio exercise than running? Ive read a lot of positives than negatives for swimming but I just want to get your guys thoughts if its a better substitute for boxing.

Ive been boxing for a while now but I dont run because my knee is messed up, so the way i get my cardio in is by sparring and high activity rate during training.

    Running, TKO, R6

    Anyways,
As long as you can push the pace in the pool swimming can be a brutal workout. A lot of purists will tell you that running is superior, and in some ways they're right. I personally am not a strong enough swimmer to really push myself the way I should.

But, if your knee is that messed up that you can't run then try out swimming as an alternative, there's also biking (either road, mountain or stationary), skipping and christ knows how many other little sick twisted things people have invented to jack up their cardio.

after reading this i started thinking about my college days. i was a heavy lifter and would swim really hard. the duel workout really put a lot of stress on my shoulders that ended up causing pain.

swimming in the morning and boxing at night would probably not be a good thing by putting a lot of stress on the shoulders twice a day. i'll stick to running in the morning. i do not run in the morning unless i have a fight coming up.

i think that start running a month or six weeks before a fight is enough running for the body.

my knee is pretty messed, my doctor said i tore some ligaments and that its gonna take months to heal. She told me that i shouldnt do any high impact workouts that require high usages of the legs, so i figured swimming was good. I tried biking and its not bad, but its very hard on the thighs.

sounds like your seats too low, raise it up so when your seated your feet just barely touch the ground.

Imo swimming is best. You get a full body workout with it just like you do with boxing.

Swimming offers more of a passive resistance which is beneficial. Plus Rocky did it in Rocky III when he had to reinvent his style to beat Clubber Lang.

That is not the best way to measure seat placement. You should have someone help you hold the bike upright, get in your proper seated position and put your feet on the pedals. When you are on our farthest downstroke on the crank, your knees should be just slightly bent, not straight and locked out, but slightly bent. That is where the seat should be adjusted to. When on my road bike, my feet don't reach the ground when seated.

Swimming is only an efficient workout if you suck at it.

When I was lifeguarding I had to guard swim team practices. They did like 3 workouts a day and the warmup and cooldown alone were looooooong. When you're a good swimmer, swimming is easy.

Now when I watched the foreign exchange students (asians), most of them could get a tremendous workout in only a few laps because they could barely swim, so they put a lot of unnecessary resistance on themselves.

If you do swim, make sure you have time to recover for your boxing workouts. Boxing with sore shoulders sucks.

Makes sense because I can tell you that my body is not built for swimming.

Swimming is easier on your joints. Good for people with knee or feet problems when running.

Have you ever given one piece of good advice? how long have you been riding bike regularly for exercse? do you even have a bike?

go to a bike store say bikings alittle hard on my thighs and i was wondering if you could tell/show me if my bikes set up properly for my size as far as the seat and hendel bars are concerned.

i bet you the first thing they will do is have you ride the bike a little in a circle......then they will probly raise the seat and you will be like holy crap this is sooo much better.

if you want can you come back here and say thanks or atleast something to the exent of "having my bike adjusted properly made a world of diffrence."....really you dent even need to say anything....i know my advice is good advice.
