I've read that alot of the top pro's incorporate swimming as part of their training regimen, is it a common thing? And if so what type of swimming workout is ideal?

I did swimming in High School. Depending on the day and stroke, a typical workout would be something like..
    400 free warmup
    10x50 kick
    10x100 free
    4x200 free
    400 free
    10x25 sprints
    100 warmdown

thanks sounds good, does anybody know what a boxers swimming workout might look like
or would it be similar to this?

  4. For fun I do 4-6 x 50m freestyle. 4 x 50m breast stroke. I dont do butterfly but if you were serious about training that would be a great stroke for a boxer.

Your lats and obliques are going to be sore as **** doing swimming and breathing is difficult at first.

Didn't Pacquiao tried that once while preparing for the Cotto fight when he couldn't do roadwork because a typhoon just blasted through town?

I think he just replaced long distance running with swimming laps. I think he eventually gave up since he wasn't much of a swimmer.

Swimming would have to be good for the lung capacity.

I've read in a Juan Diaz interview that he doesn't run because of bad knees or something, but part of he's cardio is swimming and he mentions about it increasing lung capacity, it's also a safer form of cardio as you can't realy injure yourself swimming.
A good technique I read when swimming freestyle is to hold your breath for two strokes then cone up for air, hold it for four strokes then come up for air..etc and that way you get a bigger lung capacity.

Don't swim if you have good joints, it ruins your explosiveness. Some could argue that it does no harm when building basic fitness but that's about it.

I suppose thats fine, but if you want to get better at swimming, hold your breath for three strokes, then 5. Alternate sides you breathe on, helps you maintain a straight path, and besides, breathing less during swimming makes you faster.

I was not able to find an exact scientifical article but this one explains everything anyway. Explosiveness is basically force/time :more force you generate in the shortest amount of time, more explosive you are. With swimming you train just the opposite. Low force is generated and it takes more than a second to finish your stroke.

Boxers should run long (debatable), medium, short distances and lift light and heavy loads, depanding on the stage of the training camp.

It's funny when people mention pro's in a debate. If they are doing it they must know something. It's like saying that people who eat every day know exactly what to eat to stay healthy...

I'm sure you could also do sprints to work on explosiveness though. Especially with diving.

Sprints on track are ok but not in water.

So you obviously wouldn't use it as your principal training tool, but I don't see how there'd be anything wrong with supplementing your training with a few laps in the pool, as long as you're not finding detrimental to other workouts or your performane in the ring. Swimming is excellent for recovery as well.
