Does anybody switch southpaw when sparring. I've tryed it, but feel so akward that as soon as I switch I go back to Orthodox
It takes practice. If you really want it, start with shadowboxing. The footwork is the first thing to learn.
I do it when I spar against southpaws, haven't fought one yet since I started doing it. I used to not be able to go southpaw at all. Then one day I was messing around shadow boxing and decided to do a round as southpaw and it felt good. Not sure what changed and why I was all of a sudden able to do it, but I tried it out in sparring against a southpaw and I was landing way more punches then I usually would. Don't have to worry about keeping your foot outside and all that stuff, just jab and box normally. My southpaw straight left is better than my orthodox straight right. Not harder, but faster and straighter.
I sometimes switch to a southpaw stance when I'm on the inside. I started doing it mainly so I could effectively throw the right to the body then straight up with the right uppercut, like Tyson did.
I spent 6 months of changing southpaw very hard but if you stick to it should pay off but unless your confident in your own ability I would not recommend itbut good luck mate anyway.
i do it only if i'm on the outside to throw more right jabs and to get more active if im not landing and to confuse my opponent
I feel really good shadowboxing as a southpaw, but when I start sparring as a southpaw my defence is terrible, I'm unaccurate. I think that the different angles where the punches come from throw me of.
I do it only on the inside to get body shots after the early round sharpness is gone. A right hook (head), quick shuffle to SP, left shovel hook/uppercut (body) inside to split the guard. Not sure if that counts as "switching"? Unless you are blessed with unholy athleticism? IMHO, switch hitting isn't worth a crap. You will end up being an average fighter in one stance and a below average fighter in the other.
