Know what else is visible in that gif? The knuckle portion of the glove, which collides against Vitali's eyebrow in the first frame of the gif you yourself posted. Keep in mind, the eyebrow was where the cut was opened so if you subscribe to the idea that this punch opened the laceration, the video evidence from the gif suggests that the knuckles were the cause of it.

Now, let's advance to the next frame, where Lewis is shown driving through on the punch. At that point, the thumb may or may not come into contact with his foe's face, but because of the way Lennox delivers the punch, it does so at a point just under the eye of his opponent, and nowhere near the cut in question.

That's if the thumb connects with any degree of force on the follow-through. VK's head was already starting to rock back from the force of the initial contact, so that becomes less feasible...And the lack of a cut below the eye, and VK's lack of rapid blinking and swelling of the eye in the seconds that immediately follow the punch provide evidence of this.

As for your final point, it must be noted that Lewis earned a split of those four rounds, so the momentum of the fight had certainly shifted from the first two rounds, when VK was in firm control.

Plus...the cut got progressively worse as the fight went on, and ultimately resulted in a stoppage.
