I voted No. I think Vitali is a great enigma, a "could have been." He lost too many years to injuries and with his brother holding the #1 spot and majority of the titles he never got to build a large resume of top contenders like him. He also had some bad luck in so many fights not coming off. His 2003-2004 could have been Lennox Lewis II, Corrie Sanders, Mike Tyson, and Haseem Rahman. All winnable matches, that would have made for a great run. Instead he ended up with Kirk Johnson, Sanders, Danny Williams, and lots of surgery.
Head to head I would favor him against just about any HW ever. Has a great record, great Championship tenure, but his opponents are meh. Had he gotten the W against Byrd (even though Vitali dominated him), his career would be much better. Very good, but not an ATG.
Yeah I have such an agenda I've named other fighters I suspect of the same thing. atsch I don't know Vittles juiced as a pro any more than you know he didn't. What I do know is chronic injuries in sports are often related to steroid abuse. What I also know is Vits failed a steroid test expelling him from going to the Olympics. I also know that no elite athlete is clueless as to what they are taking, especially someone as intelligent as Vits. So Bat, do us all a favor and get off your high horse. You want to talk about agenda's? I'm wondering what yours is for thinking Hopkins is juicing and in your words "probably has been most of his career".
Chris Byrd fought Vittles on 7 days notice giving up almost 40lbs and 8 inches in height. Stop your whining! :-(
Im not discrediting his whole career, Im saying that there is reason to speculate just as there is many other fighters today. And remember my friend, Vits was a grown and intelligent adult when he did take PED's, it not like he was a child. If you believe the theory he didn't know what he was taking and it was the doctors fault than you have to believe the same thing of James Toney or any other number of fighters who have used this excuse after failing a rest.
Vitali fans rank him a great because they think he's a hard fight for any HW in history. Fighters aren't judged on fantasy fights ,they are judged on the guys they fought and beat and Vitali beat nobody and lost to the two best guys he fought. Vitali does't come anywhere greatness. He held a title fighting left-overs in a terrible division he halved with his brother while still managing to duck the best fights available.
