It was a proper, World Title fight. Ridiculous to even consider expecting Lennox to hang around for the year it took Klitschko's face to heal so he could have a rematch after that battering.
As much as I will defend the result as a legitimate win and subsequently defend Lewis's decision not to give Vitali a rematch the fact of the matter is that Lennox did hang around for long enough that Vitali recovered from the injury and returned to the ring. Lewis beat Vitali in June 2003, Vitali returned to action in December 2003 beating Kirk Johnson to become WBC Mandatory, Lewis then announced his retirement in February 2004. If Lewis had wanted to fight Vitali again he could have done so. He could have had a keep-busy fight in the autumn or winter of 2003 then fought Vitali in the spring of 2004. I think he didn't do so because he'd lost his drive and ethusiam ever since he'd beaten Tyson.
he was 38 wasn't he? who wants to fight prime legit contenders when you are 38? just asking for trouble. Vits isnt great but he was prime, and a legit contender.
I think Lewis failed to see that Vitali was the real deal. A second match/win over Vitali not only would have made Lewis $25+ million. It also would have given him more credibility than a win over RJJ or a rematch against Tyson -- both of which were discussed by Lewis' team during 2003-2004. IMO Lewis thought Vitali was a flash in the pan who'd quickly disappear and who wasn't worthy of getting the attention of a rematch.
I really respect Lewis for knowing when to walk away. He could've very easily fought someone else for easy money instead of re-matching Vitali.
It certainly cant be said that Wlad didn't enter the same ring as Povetkin as opposing fighters but it's pretty hard to actually call that event a "fight".
