Lewis wanted to retired years ago, he only hung around for Tyson.

Lewis had accomplished everything he had set out to accomplished in the sport and had no more to prove to himself or anyone, but I think he still held out the hope that he could get one or two more easy paydays out of boxing before retiring.

He was, after all, telling the world that he only got better with age after he beat Tyson. This may not have been what he genuinely thought - he may have only said it because he felt none of the new generation would be a challenge and he wanted people to think he'd fight on for years so he could continue to get the big paydays - but he still said it.

The trouble he had with Vitali in the first fight forced him to accept reality that there were still dangerous opponents out there that he'd have to face if he stuck around and I just dont believe he could motivate himself anymore to meet those kind of threats. It wasn't that he was scared or anything, its just that he'd run out of passion and determination by that stage.

he'd climbed his everest by beating Tyson, the last remaning fighter really of that generation. He had nothing else to prove. Lewis always was a smart guy.

I think his comment about getting better with age was in reference to how great Tyson was when he was younger, whereas Lewis got better as he aged.

He didnt mean he was going to fight forever.

Yes i agree, i think Lewis hung around for a couple of potential paydays but after the Vitali fight, thought to himself, may as well hang them up or end up like Ali, Tyson and Holyfield, brain damaged and broke

And as the rules of Boxing states, if a fight is stopped for injury, the victory is given to the boxer ahead on the scorecards.

All the judges had Vitali ahead on points, so, according to the rules that are commonly accepted and respected, Vitali won. :deal

    Same old discussion.
Vitali was up no doubt but the stoppage was the correct thing to do. Vitali would have continued and credit to him for that but the referee/doc saved him from himself.
I was gutted for him at the time and since as it was a ballsy performance but Lennox may well have caused serious damage had the fight continued.
Lewis comments immediately after the fight and his manner with Larry Merchant didn't make him look good but he had just survived a scare and reacted badly to being criticised.
Lewis was on the way down and Vitali was on the way up, so really the outcome that we got was the best in the long run as everyone can make a claim that they were the better fighter and we didn't get the division ruler being a man who was beaten by the 'proper' champion who then retired.

    TKO6 son. :hi:

The injury was caused by a PUNCH, not an accidental headbutt.

You might have a case IF the injury had been caused accidentally or illegally.

    But it wasn't.

I'm a fan of Vitali and consider that he 'retired' Lennox.

But he lost the fight by way of a TKO in the sixth round.

    One of Lennox's best wins.
