On this day in 2003, I beat a very tough Vitali Klitschko by TKO in round 6 in the last fight of my career before retiring. Klitschko was always scheduled as my very last fight but when Kirk Johnson was injured during training camp, we moved Klitschko up into the date on 10 days notice.
Vitali is an extremely tough competitor and both, he and his brother, always show up in shape and ready to fight... Unlike too many heavyweights of their era.
I considered postponing retirement for one more fight with Vitali, but in the end decided there was nothing left to prove. It was time for the new era to begin. Too many greats make the mistake of fighting well past their prime for that one last payday or fight. I was smart enough to learn from their mistakes.
