he had every chance, he didn't want to destroyed in seconds again. . once Brewster four years on was retiring with a blind eye, how brave of wlad.
The match happened in 2003, Ottke just took one more fight ( 2004 ) and let's be frank here. Was the boxing fans as interested in this re-match as Klitschko vs Lewis? I think not. The 168-pound division did not have a lot of history in it when this fight happened. Also, what was your card? Keep in mind if the ref calls a point deduction you as the judge have to score it accordingly even if you disagree with it.
Was sneaky of Lewis because he knew Vitali was not going to have a proper camp, another reason aside from the performance that suggests a rematch should have been given by Lewis. Even during his four year lay off Vitali said he would come back for Lewis. Lewis didn't want a real challenge that's clear.
can you name HW champions out of the entire history of HW boxing who was still defending the lineal title against top contenders at age 38?
Vitali admitted that he was training for Lewis since the Donald fight because he felt that negotiations were going favorably. Vitali was in perfect shape. Lewis came out of a buffet. They were miles apart in terms of physical shape and conditioning. It is outright embarassing that Vitali couldn't put that version of Lewis into the gutter if he was anything close to the fighter he's made out to be. 96 Mercer would've snapped that Lewis in half and wouldn't even need the scorecards.
Mendoza you've never boxed competitively or studied boxing technique. No it wasn't a backhand, it was a straight right deflected punch. A backhand goes deliberately from left to right. Lewis talked about retirement after Holyfield 2, that much is fact. He was 3 months of his 38th birthday. He was 38 when he retired. You're wrong Lennox never tried to fight Roy Jones, he in fact turned the fight down as Roy was too small. The Tyson rematch he wanted for money. In what way did Vitali get better after the Lennox fight. This should be worth a laugh.
There was plenty demand for rematches in those fights and now you're accusing me of shifting topics after you outright changed your criteria for worthwhile rematches in the past 20 years ? Lol. Priceless
"Interest" isn't the same as "deserving". There would have been a lot of interest in seeing Vitali fight Haye - just as there was to see Haye fight Wlad before it actually happened - but that doesn't mean Haye would have been deserving of a shot does it? Fact of the matter is Reid was victim of one of the most blatent and disgraceful examples of robbery in boxing history and deserved a second shot in a fair fight to set the record straight. It was far worse than Vitali loss to Lewis - Vitali loss was legitimate, Reid's wasn't - Reid was far more deserving of a rematch that he never got. If you cant handle it when people give you an answer why ask the question?
Vitali was training to fight on the Lewis/Johnson undercard. Both men agreed to take the fight on short notice. He had exactly the same chance to have a "proper camp" for the fight as Lewis did. Vitali doesn't get a pass on preparation time.
Not this thread again, it's sad that some can't deal with what happened and have to keep dragging this up again and again. Lewis was past his best, both were preparing to fight that night, both had agreed to fight later that year so were aware that a fight between them both would happen, they just didn't expect it to come so soon. Nobody knows if either fighter benefited in anyway from the fight being fought sooner than expected. Maybe Lewis would have been in better shape had the fight taken place in the autumn as planned but maybe not, maybe Lewis would have been in worse shape. Vitali did very well and clearly had Lewis in trouble but he simple didn't have enough that night, Lewis was still too good and too experienced. The cuts, all 3 of them were caused by legal blows, both were tired after the 6th, Vitali was holding on for dear life prior to the bell but nobody knows what would have happened after the 6th, would Vitali rally or was a swing in momentum for Lewis the final twist in a thriller of a fight? Yes Lewis agreed a rematch but chose to retire instead but according to Steward, Lewis' future wife gave him an ultimatum and he chose his wife over a rematch. Vitali agreed to fight Haye as well if he beat Chisora yet that never happened, we don't have people spamming threads with Vitali ducking Haye do we? Fighters say things and don't always follow through both Lewis and Vitali were guilty of this.
atsch Read the thread. Every point you are trying to make has been refuted with facts. Vitali was robbed of TD win and Lewis ran into retirement to avoid epic beating.
Actually when you get right down to it the only facts are; 1. They fought; 2. Lewis won by TKO6. Everything after that is meaningless jibber jabber.
