Maybe Manny needs to take a step back, and instead of closing distance fast, and getting too close to Mosley, then trying to cut off his exits, he might try hanging back a little gradually cut the ring off before he goes into close distance, then step in with his aggression when he sees he's maneuvered the opponent into a vulnerable spot because he's cutting off his(opponent) exits. You wanna see a master class in how to gradually cut the ring off, watch Hopkins-Pascal.
That was an example of cutting off the ring you idiot. It was not about the whole fight. Vernon was NOT a banger, he was a Boxer. The fact that he had the RANGE OF SKILLS to walk a man down when he needed to shows how inferior Pac is. STFU Mayorga was a World Champion. Talk all that "overrated" crap if you want, but prime Mayorga was a BEAST.
If you played sports you know about angles. Backpedling? No because he is not going to get out of a boxing stance so certain steps/angles will be limited. However even at his best there is a ROPE there. (Just like there is an out of bounds line in football.) If he back pedals he is ALWAYS stepping closer to SOMETHING. Either a rope or a corner. The trick is to rush him in spurts if he tries to "squirt out" and back to the center of the ring. Dude there are TONS of examples of short effective fighters who walk guys down. Stop trying to act as if Pac had some insurmountable task in front of him. Not hard for me to understand. I practice it. Seems hard for you to realize that a ring isn't an open field. If you keep his back to the ropes and cut him off in angles he has nowhere to go. I don't care what the reach advantage is. Pac is a top level athlete. 7 inch reach advantage from a guy who can't even muster the will to throw is a non issue. Anyway the point in walking guys down isn't 100% catching them. It takes much more energy to get away than it does to cut off a ring in a controlled fashion. Being that easy to escape, if Shane had have punched back occassionally he may not have lost. That last line? Whatever man. It only takes a split second to pause in retreat to throw a lead hook or a mean uppercut. On top of that you have the other guys momentum to allow you to immediately clinch.
You Pac excuse makers are hilarious. ATG have been knocking out fighters with no interest in engaging for years. There's nothing unique about it. Please observe the smaller fighter use his superior footwork, his jab, feints, bodywork, and angles to maneuver the 'negative' fighter into positions where he could more effectively unload his shots. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S8MbKDeByI[/ame] Seriously, Manny's struggles with cutting off the ring that night is a small critique of that any unbiased observer should have no problem agreeing to.
There are MANY great tactics boxers can use to "cut off the ring" for a fighter who is elusive and moves. PAC won't have any problems implementing that into his repertoire. And I'm sure he's worked on that. What Shane did was not boxing...it was strictly survival. Those who try to give Shane credit find it easy to point out his "Movement" and "defensive maneuvering". ****...that's call RUNNING! That's not what boxers prepare for when they "cut off the ring". In all seriousness people are looking to throw Shane a bone here for a dismal and embarrassing performance. Going 12 was the agenda and Shane's only chance at that was to run. Had he boxed or opened up to take chances there would have been a few more "round 3's" before Naz saved Shane from further punishment.
Crazy part is that you are are completely forgetting the second aspect of cutting off a ring... breaking your opponents stamina and will. At this level both men are supremely conditioned, but I think we can all agree Pac is the better conditioned. If effective cutting off of the ring was applied as soon as that KD occured? Mosley would not have had the wheels to stay in the fight. Even you can admit that when the false KD occured Pac got a fire to him and pressed. The pressure had Mosley on the edge of exhaustion, spoiler tactics or not, and ready to go. Had Pac had that sense of urgency from the KD on? He most definitely would have stopped Mosley. That being my point that if Mosley, a guy who uses this type of Boxing as a backup plan can do this a skilled counter puncher will make Pac look like a complete fool. Pac couldn't shut down a "running" Boxer Puncher. What is going to happen when he faces a guy for whom "sticking and moving" is his bread and butter and he can do it like second nature WITH offense? Pac is going to lose. :deal
Oh yea.....That guy Tyson was fighting was definitly the "HW" version of Sugar Shane.:good Even this guy stopped to trade with Tyson....when Shane tried that in Round 3, PAC helped him change his mind on trying to box or fight and thought it would be better for his health to run.
The best way for PAC to proceed is to stop "CHASING" these guys. When they see Manny come forward they're instinct is to flea. So just stay planted and let them come to you. Its just in Manny's DNA to attack, so that would be hard for PAC to apply in a real fight. Cotto at some point began to RUN too. Towards the end of the fight where PAC actually stopped, dead in his tracks and threw up his arms in disgust. Which prompted Cotto to engage b/c lets face it...it's embarrassing when a grown man at this level is RUNNING away. Especailly when the guy you are running from makes it known to the millions watching that he's having a hard time catching you.
Not true, because most boxing fans understood that Shane Mosely, at this juncture of his career and coming off his last 2 performances, should have never even been in the ring with Pac. The way he fought is the way old guys looking to cash out fight. Nothing new about it nor was it unexpected by anyone with any boxing sensitivities.
Again, the video clearly shows how a puncher with superior foot speed can use his jab, footwork and skills to cut off the ring and position a 'negative' fighter into vunerable positions. Why do you think Ratliff attempted to start punching back? Because Tyson made the ring smaller for him and left him with limited options. It's really not that complicated.
How is a guy with a 67" reach supposed to land a downstairs jab on a guy with a 70+" reach? Pac would have been WIDE OPEN to be hit if he'd followed your advice, and Mosley can HIT. There are so many people on here who open their mouths without thinking things out first. :-(
I agree Shane had no hope in their with PAC. And shane figured that out early on in the fight. But let's not fool ourselves...this ain't the first fight that probably shouldn't have been made but b/c of the name and the ease of Marketability in promoting the fight....the MONEY aspect outweighed the legitimacy of the fight. Shane can't compete against the likes of the ELITE! And when I say Elite I'm talking about Floyd and PAC. I"m sure Shane would proabaly beat berto or Ortiz b/c they are not the extreme talent that Floyd and PAC are. But what PAC and his promoter did was what most do to Old lions who have one foot out the door...they give them a reality check and that helps the fighter move on...some just take longer than others to acknowledge it.
That dude Tyson fought had TERRIBLE foot work. Watch his foot work and how he SQUARES up when moving out to the side. That is a HUGE "no-no" in boxing and it creates a greater target for the opponent on the attack and he did that constantly. Sure he flicked the Jab out there but Tyson wasn't concered with dudes power. Tyson did the right thing in cutting off the ring but it was EASY based on the level of comp he was in there with. And he did try to trade with Mike and with Mike that's Russian roulette. And the ring was smaller! Not just b/c Mike made it a phone booth with great footwork that was far superior than Ratliff.
