Well i broke my ribs around a month before xmass in a so called light sparring session we were doing defence offense drills and the guy i was sparring took it uponhimself to unload some very heavy bombs onto me ...anyway he fractured two of my left ribs and i was out of training for around 3 weeks doctor said to take 6 weeks off but after the third i just couldnt take sitting on my ass all day...so i eased myself into training around New years, in the last two weeks i didnt feel anymore pain in my ribs so i decided to spar again and my coach offered me my first amateur thai boxing fight...As my ribs felt ok i decided to take it and up my training and spar at least 3 times a week...then last week in a pure boxing session this guy got me with a semi decent hook to the body not to powerfull but enough to make me drop my hands..i didnt think much of it then but when i got home on the buss the pain started coming back, i ignored it for a day decided to take the next day off to recover, so two days after that i went to my Thai boxing session and sparred full muay thai rules, i dont know what happened, could of been a knee or just whislt grappling for the clinch something went really wrong in my ribs and since then im feeling really ****ed, havent been able to sleep properly, cant get out of bed without considerable amounts of pain, hurts when i cough ect...so my question is, has anybody ever had a similar type of injury and should i sit out this upcoming fight, cause im really scared that one big knee in the fight will be enought to lay me out or really aggravate my ribs... Thank you in advance for your advice, Kind regards, Xoum.
If you are not confident fighting the way you are (and lets face it at amateur level where there is no other incentive such as money to drive you on) then you are best sitting it out until you fully heal. I thai box and broke my foot in a sparring session and it still niggles me now but if you give your body time to recover you shoukd be able to take the next fight with full confidence and with no doubt in your mind tht you are fit and healthy. Just my opinion.
I had the same injury a couple of years ago. And I can say, without taking proper time off it took months to heal. It took close to a year for me to feel 100%. It's not worth it. If you can't sleep or breath, what makes you think you can (or should) fight? Take time off, listen to your doctor and go back when you're healed. You might want to get another xray to make sure you didn't make it worse.
Some people heal faster than others and like you I am one of the slow ones. In my view you have to figure out how to train around the injury, but save the competitive fights for when you are healthy.
injuries suck...just start drinking booze until you fully recover. it'll help w. the depression from being away from boxing
right on ive been doing that all weekend! i've taken you guys advice, and ive decided not to take the fight for a few reasons: not wanting to loose because of the injury, not wanting to aggravate the injury and be out of training for longuer(+ im going to thailand for 6 months to improve my Thai boxing i wouldnt want to go there carrying an injury) and it was my bday over the weekend so was it the perfect excuse to stop the spartan diet of exercise and crap food( i mean healthy food) I had a burger king a Kfc and a steak and chips!!!!! and drank like a fish! But thank you all for your advice! Mucho Respect, Xoum.
