Re-watching some older fights, and just finished Holmes-Snipes. While I didn't have issues with the stoppage, the thought of Snipes just taking a knee during that initial onslaught came to mind. That, in turn, made me wonder about the tactic in general, when it started it's use, effectiveness, etc.

Does anyone know when taking a knee became acceptable?

Is it an effective means of clearing the cobwebs, so to speak, or a fighter that is staggered enough to require at least taking a knee, is it just too difficult to actually think about doing?

By taking a knee most fighters will be conceding a 10-8 round, but I wonder how often it might help get through a tough patch. Maybe there just isn't a lot of middle ground where taking a knee might help.

Perhaps Accidentally-on purpose Instigating a Time out...by having the Gum Shield "Fall"
out might be a more favoured method of obtaining a quick Breather ? (without Penalty) it's not guaranteed though as Not all ref's will fall for it, and will only call a halt during a Lull in the Action,
