I thought this would be an interesting thread to start. Using the attributes in the latest Fight Night Round 3 (I can't wait for Round 4 to come out soon!!). I will give the bio and stats for both Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. After that, I will use the seven attributes from FN Rd 3 and ESB posters can indicate if there is an advantage in any area for Cotto, Margarito, or they are about even.

Here is the tale of the tape:

Miguel Cotto - WBA Welterweight Champion
    • Age: 27 (10-29-80)
    • Residence: Caguas, Puerto Rico
    • Birthplace: Caguas, Puerto Rico
    • Record: 32-0, 26 KOs
    • Height: 5’7”
    • Reach: 67”
    • Manager, trainer: Evangelista Cotto (uncle)
Antonio Margarito - Challenger and former WBO and IBF welterweight champion
    • Age: 30 (3-18-78 )
    • Residence: Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
    • Birthplace: Torrance, California
    • Record: 36-5, 1 NC, 26 KOs
    • Height: 5’11”
    • Reach: 73”
    • Managers: Francisco Espinoza, Sergio Diaz Jr.
    • Trainer: Javier Capetillo
Now, here are the 8 attributes from Fight Night Round 3:

    Power
    Speed
    Agility
    Stamina
    Body
    Chin
    Heart
    Cuts

Indicate where the fighter are even or have an advantage. Feel free to comment on the tale of the tape as well.

In terms of absolute force, Margo edges Cotto by a bit but Cotto is certainly the one between the two with the higher speed/force ratio. Unlike Margarito, who is typically wide, Cotto can generate power from punches of smaller amplitude.

In every acceptation of the words "speed" and "agility", Cotto wins these categories by a mile.

The stamina category goes to Margarito though there's nothing wrong with Cotto's stamina. The same can be said about their chins.

Margarito's advantage lies essentially in the "body" category. Taller, longer reach, bigger.

Both men have heart, lots of, neither cuts easy.

Other relevant categories are "ring intelligence" and "boxing technique". Both belong to Cotto. I pretty much think that this is where the outcome will be decided.

Interesting that most people see the fight playing out like that, when Cotto is the one who has been knocked down and rocked in the past.

You never know...honestly, I think both men have the capability of knocking the other down but in different ways. Let's be honest here, if it goes to the score cards, Cotto wins because let's face it, Cotto is the champ and he would have sustained all what Margarito had to dish at him. Plus, Cotto would have used a mixture of boxing and slugging to keep Tony at bay while inflicting his own damage. Not saying that would happen but that is one scenario.

Margarito is NOT 5'11...I really don't believe that at all. Cotto is 5'7 at the most, hes probably even 5'6.5 and he stood next to Margarito and really wasn't THAT much shorter than Marg. Either or, SOMEBODY his lying about their height. But My bro in law got a picture with Cotto and he is 5'9, Cotto looked much shorter...I don't know whats going on there.

I don't know what to say but according to HBO and Top Rank Margarito is
billed as 5'11 and Cotto is 5'7. That's what the stats say.
