If Margarito fights at his range this will turn out to be a difficult encounter for Cotto.

Everyone fails to remember how close the Lovemore Ndou fight was. That was a fight where Cotto was in with a bigger opponent, with more durability and more stamina. Cotto only edged Ndou by 2 points if I recall correctly.

Like I said before I see this playing out alot the same. It is going to be a tough, tough encounter if Margarito works behind a jab and makes Cotto come forward to get anything done.

Because Cotto loads up on every punch he has stamina problems if pressed. He is not used to the style that Margarito represents which is a volume, relaxed style. Margarito is very relaxed in the ring and that may trouble a guy like Cotto who is methodical.

Margarito can make this incredibly difficult if he doesn't allow Cotto any downtime. Downtime is something Cotto was afforded against the likes of Judah and Mosley, but perhaps not Margarito.

For Cotto to make his mark in this he will literally have to make his mark. He's gonna have to nail Margarito good to discourage him. And even then that is a daunting task because Margarito is not easily discouraged.

All this talk about boxing, skills, grades will all go out the window come fight night. It'll come down to heart, stamina and style. I see Margarito stopping Cotto sometime around 8 rounds.

Cotto has less ringware, faster hands, faster feet, and greater mobility.

Margarito has a far sturdier chin, higher workrate, and greater stamina.

One more thing: Cotto is the superior technician, with better footwork, better defense, and is a more versatile & smarter fighter. Cotto should win, but Margarito has serious power and is stronger, so you never know.

 

Regarding punching power I have to give the clear edge to Margarito. Cotto is more of an accumulation puncher.
