Bummy, this will most likely interest you. After a sparring session today, and I got out of the ring, I got the chance to chat with Larry, who was watching. He was telling me about his fights with Wells. He said that Nick confused him with his awkward southpaw jab, and he never quite adjusted to it. He said that after the 2nd defeat he made sure to work on it, but it didn't do him any good at the time. Larry said that Wells could hit pretty hard, but what really got Larry was his awkward style and jab. He said Wells all around was awkward to fight. The main thing Larry explained about was that Wells's jab was extremely awkward and it threw Larry's rythem off a lot. Larry also said that Wells had a hard right hook that he would dig into you.

Isn't that how one is supposed to spell that particular "a" word? :)

Very interesting, Hey southpaws can be confusing, especially southpaws that could punch, and if they have fast hands it can really cause problems (ask Vlad vs Sanders) Larry was in tough, Wells and Bobick were pretty dominant as amatuers, they split a few between them but I was not happy with the way they were guided in the pro's Bobick kept that strait up style and Wells should have develpoed a pro style around his power, I also seen the same thing happen to Willie Dewitt, thats when the money guys not the Boxing guys get there grips on a fighter and ruin them instead of develope them, anyway Rich G. did a good job bringing Holmes along and he developed well in the pro ranks, I think Larry was a great fighter, the best of his era, Thats not my beef with him, it was the failure to fight the best of his times for Boxing's sake and that could also be blamed on his promoter. Anyway Larry was honest and spoke like a man in what he said to you about Wells and those kind of losses can happen to the best, all in the learning process.

Yep. Larry was very honest. He said how he now knows how to fight a south paw better, but back then, he was pretty much clue less because that was one of the few he fought.

You should ask him what he thought about Hagler, Bill. A different weight class, but the way he could shift his fighting style was very impressive, to say the least!

Did Wells turn pro? I followed boxing then, but have no recollection of him.

..Nick Wells had a brief and unsuccessful pro career. Same problem he had as an amateur.... never really got in shape and had no stamina. But lord, what a puncher!! Holmes is making an understatement when he says Wells "hit hard" . He'd come rushing ut if his corer and bang you one and down you would go, and if you managed to get up as Bobick did Wells soon faded. He was much like Earnie Shaver and Bob Satterfield in that respect. He was short for a heavyweight and was always a tad flabby. No telling what he might have done if....but then, that's true of so many guys, isn't it.

fellas, i saw the bobick holmes fight on you tube.total greatness,i mean by the fact that someone had the footage of these old fights.i have been trying so hard to find some sort of old footage such as this forever.ive got a few fights of dad but they are all without sound.if yall watch it on you tube notice how cosell says that holmes was a sub for wells because bobick had beaten wells so bads around the eyes.just to set the record straight my father was inthe team hotel with jesse valdez. jesse was sucking lemons to make weight when he threw one at dad and ran out of the room(HORSEPLAY)with my father in pursuit of him, though as soon as my father got to the door jesse was opening it back up and it gashed my fathers left eyebrow open.dad went on to ko holmes the next day in rd 1.but bobick opened the cut up and made it bleed into his eyes.although my father broke bobicks nose and was a worse mess than his eye.dad was on his way to victory but the blood in the eye was the factor.my father went as the alternate at the 72 games.this cut alone never healed correctly and plagued him for the rest of his career.cuddos to holmes for talking about the wells holmes fights.what a great champion he was.

You can edit the title by double clicking on your thread, when you're in the classic boxing section. Of course, don't double click on the text itself, but next to it. :good

Nice post by the way. Was this your way of telling that you got knocked out by a southpaw? ;)

I hate southpaws, by the way. Not just fighting them, but watching them makes me feel creepy.

Peter Mullen was an Irish Amature HW champion and has since become a really great and famous boxing coach over here.(Ireland). I am a fellow coach and honored to have him as a friend. He went on tour with the Irish team to the USA and had three fights-his opponents Holmes, Wells and Leroy Jones(if memory serves me right) how unlucky is that, needless to say he lost the lot but as a man is second to nobody. Just wondering does Nick Wells have any memory of their contest?
