Floyd Mayweather Jr. is arguably the most talented boxer on the planet. However, his recent mainstream and financial success has seemed to separate him from reality. In a recent article on another boxing website, Mayweather reiterated that he does not feel that Cotto brings enough money to the table in order to warrant a fight between the two. His advisor, Leonard Ellerbe, talked about how Mayweather wants to gain more mainstream success. Mayweather ended by once again claiming that he's the greatest of all time and spouted some non sensical drivel about Ray Robinson not being undefeated and not winning 6 titles in 5 weight classes as evidence to his claim that he's better than Robinson.

Let's get a few things straight about Mr. Mayweather. Number 1, he is a boxer. He only makes money because people want to see him fight. He's not wrestler, or a dancer, or a rapper, or a movie star. So if he wants to continue gaining mainstream success, he's going to need to continue fighting, and stop with all this other garbage. Number 2, Robinson fought over 200 times and fought in a era where there was only 8 divisions. Mayweather's undefeated record and championships in 5 divisions is impressive, but not enough to stake the claim that he's better than Robinson. Lastly, underneath it all, Mayweather may be one of the most talented boxers ever. However, it's not what's underneath, but what you do that defines you. If Mr. Mayweather wants to be defined as one of the greatest ever, he still has more work to do.

Mayweather says that he's the face of boxing. I agree. However, being the face of boxing about more than just being selfish and looking out only for your own interests. Being the face of boxing is about raising the profile of the sport. One of the best ways to do so is to promote young talent. There are many good young fighters between 147 and 154. They may not be big names, but they could become big names if a high profile fighter such as Mayweather gave them a chance. Mayweather could still make a lot of money off these fights as he is a good salesman. He knows how to promote a fight, and he could sell any fight to the public as long as he's taking on credible fighters. De La Hoya was the previous face of boxing. He got over many good young fighters by giving them a chance(including Mr. Mayweather). I think it's time that the new face of boxing do the same.

    And that's the memo.

All this "not enough money" chat is one of two things.

    1 - A blatant duck

2 - He's trying to make conditions more favourably for the negotiation.

If it turns out to be 1, he's a bum.

If it turns out to be 2, as I think, it'll be a great fight, and I pick Mayweather to win.

    Great piece bro..
I defo agree Mayweather is his loosing grip on reality!
He belives his own press, Truth is he will never be a SSR, SRL or to a lesser degree ODLH. True, people want to watch him fight BUT not because they like him, But because they want to see him lose. Mayweather had a chance to become everything he could have in his boxing career but IMO he decided to go the other way by not fighting the BEST rather by fighting who he picked BEST instead. The # of fighter's Mayweather cheated us (The fans) on in a Vs. matchup with over the course of his career by far outshines his record. To be the best you have to fight the best of your era. Floyd has failed that & at 30 it won't get any better.

Good post by a good poster. Hopefully Mayweather is waiting for (Cotto) to get more public recognition, which he certainly should if he gives an outstanding performance in his next fight and it is highly publicized.

I think Mayweather is throwing his prime years down the drain chatting ****, he is more interested in being famous than a fighter. He has the skills to be the GOAT but doesnt seem to want to prove it, DLH and Hatton are good wins for him, but winning rematches means nothing.

Miguel Cotto is a huge name on boxing, it is complete bull that PbF says there isnt any money in it. Anybody who has ever watched boxing knows Mayweather - Cotto is the best fight the sport has to offer, its a multi million dollar superfight no doubt!

147/54 has some big fights, career defining, legacy securing fights other than Cotto, who wouldnt like to see Mayweather go against Forrest, Margarito, Clottey, even an old Shane Mosley!

Mayweather claiming Cotto isn't big money is nonsense. Cotto isn't just as big of a payday as a rematch with De La Hoya.

I don't blame him (or any fighter) on a personal level for going after the bigger payday, it's what most people would do, but it is what it is. A lousy rematch which will do very little for his all-time standing, and a fight that hardcore fans for the most part are unhappy with.

True Cotto - Margo is a mega fight on its own, definetaly the figt of 2008, I cant see how the World Welterweight Champion can ignore a winner of a match like that.

I think it'll happen in 2009, should both guys remain undefeated, but they both have to represent the biggest payday for each other.

If Mayweather went after Cotto right now, I think we'd just end up getting Cotto-De La Hoya anyway.

IMO, if you place Cotto in a PPV Vs. a contender
it would outsell Mayweather Vs. a contender
(& Not a household name contender)

That would put to rest all this not generating $ BS.
Floyd is protecting his "0" it's all he has at this point.
A fighter like Miguel don't care about losing, he will continue to fight regardless, where as an L would destroy Mayweather's Career & standing becasue of all the **** he has talked over the years about being the ATG, while always being accussed of ducking certain fighter's, for PBF to lose to them now would be a sad thing because clearly if Mayweather was going to beat a Cotto it would have been before now. @ 30 and beyond he is putting himself in more risk.

I don't see it, not at this point. Mayweather has put up much better PPV numbers than Cotto.

Cotto-Mosley was reported by Bob Arum as 400k, while other reports had it in the 340-360 range. I believe the other reports over Mr. "Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth". Cotto-Judah did less than 200k.

By contrast, Mayweather-Gatti and Maywather-Judah both did in the mid 300s, and Mayweather-Baldomir did 325k.

And that was before Mayweather fought DLH and started Dancing With the Stars.

Cotto might become a bigger PPV draw but it'll take some time.

was it not proven that cotto/gomez (if thats the last person he fought), was one of the lowest ppv numbers in a long time?

mayweather is doing the smart thing (im not much of a pbf fan btw), he's letting cotto do the hard work - make his name, then fight him when it truly solidifies each others legacy.

either way - i really cant see pbf losing.

Cotto-Gomez was on regular HBO, but yeah, it did poor ratings.
