I called this some months ago before Rolly was replaced by Cruz about the fight being on PPV.
I'm glad that the PPV numbers were poor. Serves TMT & Showtime right for putting trash cherry pick fights on PPV instead of free TV on FOX. Let it keep happening.

But he is a big enough star to sell 150k against basically anybody.

Showtime never releases numbers unless it's a giant giant PPV.

It should have. No one knew cruz as he was a replacement. Tank is a PPV fighter but not every Tank fight is PPV worthy. He needs to do some free TV fights and the Cruz fight is a perfect example of that.

Who is the "reliable journalist"? This number sounds artificially low.

There are no boxing ppv stars right now, i know that hurts some people that hear that but its true. These boxing stars today have less charisma than a burnt slice of pizza, cursing at each other or insulting others trying to get attention to your boxing event like a hoodrat doesnt attract the masses, most people like respectful boxers that can make them smile and laugh while relating to them.

agreed. Also in the era of snapchat, youtube, streaming etc there will likely be no more PPV stars. Plus boxing is dying in popularity in the US. Facts.

Social media helps people in good ways and bad ways, its how you use it. people will pay to watch and support a respectable fighter but he has to be entertaining in the ring too, knocking people out doesnt matter as much as how you do it. wilder and many others always wondered why he was never a star in the usa which is because his fights had no buildup before knocking the other boxer out, he mostly got his ass kicked before the ko, it is not an attractive way to win viewers, then the whole choking a woman thing in vegas while de la hoya buried it plus wanting “ a body on his record “ turned off all of these brands and companies.

The lack of global boxing superstars is due to lack of charisma, relatability to the general public, marketability, entertaining fighting style and respectfulness. Nobody wants a lame-o or wannabe looking gangbanger on a box of wheaties, endorsing rolex or fundraising for shriners hospital. These promoters, managers and boxers themselves keep on trying to see why their fighters can’t go global which is astonishing, it’s not hard to figure out. But see that is what set dempsey, tyson, ali, leonard, and 90’s foreman apart from the rest, they knew what to do, it’s up to the boxers to figure it out then the promoters and managers ride along.

In a way though, the PPV numbers show you when a fighters refusal to step up is starting to ruin their popularity - it tells the promoter it's time to stop messing around or fans will stop paying their wages.

This PPV is a case in point - it's great that it's done badly, as Tank is wasting his best years avoiding the best fighters and it's time he stepped up.

This is a good point, but not always. There's two types of PPV fighters; there's fighters like Tank who have a decent level of popularity but needs a good opponent to get good PPV numbers. Then there's the Canelo's and Joshua's who sell out arenas and PPVs fighting journeyman. With these guys PPV numbers will not represent good competition.

The level of Tank's opposition is far lower than Joshua and Canelo typically fight.

If a fighter takes the **** for too long, people get sick of watching them walk through dross, especially if they make it too easy.

I posted this earlier. I could post it every single Saturday of the week forever, but I won't.
PPV for the Tank fight and many others is ridiculous. And it's killed boxing.

    1 NBA game
    42 college basketball games
    2 NFL games
    1 college football game
    1 high school football game
    1 golf match
    2 NHL games
    2 College hockey games
    3 soccer games
    2 pro lacrosse games
    2 figure skating tournaments
    1 car race

Plus literally thousands of movies and tv shows. All free or nearly so.

But if I want to watch boxing I need to pay $20 to do so.

Strange way to run a sport.

We need to revisit the concept of PPV, and the fans can elicit change by not purchasing fights that are not PPV worthy. It should only be for elite fights, otherwise you’re driving casuals away and these guys are denied the chance to build a fan base and embed themselves in the public consciousness. The networks can, and should, be able to put on decent cards at no extra cost because if they don’t then they’re ironically ruining their chances at producing valid PPV stars. These guys are massively talented but they’re all afraid of being shut out from the PPV stakes so they won’t risk a loss unless they have nowhere else to go. Who can blame them at this point? That’s the business climate they’re in.

Out of interest, who’s the ‘reliable journalist’? Can’t you be more specific about this?

Reminds me of that DS9 episode where Miles O’Brien is on trial and the details are ridiculously vague and the testimony of ‘reliable sources’ are counted as admissible evidence.
