i have been training at a boxing gym for a few months now and i have been experimenting with different ways of wrapping my hands. i also watch/study a lot of boxing videos and clips on the net and noticed the top professionals use tape on the hands under the wraps/gauze. the end product looks a lot like how they look on fight night as far as i can tell. i know for those guys with the kind of money they make using disposible materials like tape and gauze everyday is no problem and worth it to ensure safety. im thinking of using a combination of tape with reuseable gauze handwraps. and i also ordered some regular gauze to maybe make a knuckle pad out of it hoping i could reuse it atleast a few times. i have never used gauze so i dont know what to expect. i like the athletic tape on the hands as a prewrap idea but haven't tried it yet. if any of you guys have a suggestion i would appreciate it!

and do some fighters during training camp get their hand wrapped everyday like they would fight night? thanks!

Gauze will work for a knuckle pad, but for a cheaper alternative you can just use a sponge. You'll probably get a couple uses out of the gauze pads before they get all torn up and nasty from sweat. I've been using the same sponges in my wraps for nearly two years.

Yup. Some get it wrapped even more than they would wrap for a fight. In fights there is a limit to the amount of gauze and tape you can use. In training there isn't any limits so they will use more for max protection.

When you're making big money and need your hands protected, it's worth spending a couple dollars each training session on gauze and tape to keep your hands safe. But those of us who don't make any money can still get good protection with long wraps and some extra padding for the knuckles.

Just a basic dish sponge, one without the rougher part on it for scrubbing. I cut it to make it smaller and fit better. Bought a package of 4 sponges at a dollar store, only needed one and it's lasted for almost 2 years. I was constantly hurting my knuckles in training before and since I started using the sponge I haven't had any issues.

I use athletic tape directly on my knuckles (before handwraps), and on the wrists (after handwraps, but before is good too).

I also use the tape to hold down this piece of magic for knuckle padding:

    Excellent protection my method provides.
