'On March 6, Tapia is scheduled to make his return to the ring to fight Jorge Alberto Reyes 21-27-3; Tapia hasn’t been in the ring since he defeated 32 year old flyweight Evaristo Primero 14-13 in a majority decision on February 23rd, 2007.

Tapia has essentially been retired since his last fight in 2007. Over the past two years there were rumors of Tapia coming back to boxing but none that materialized.'

I loved watching Tapia in his prime, but that was a good 13-14 years ago now. What is he still doing fighting? I hope he doesn't have money problems, that would suck. He's only fighting a journeyman, but he only fought a journeyman in his last fight and it's on record as a MD, and that was 3 years ago.

Anyway, Jorge Alberto Reyes as mentioned is his opponent. 17 of his 21 wins inside the distance. He's not fought since September 2009, and it looks as though this fight will take place around 135-140.

Tapia is delusional.A shame what drugs and a gang like mentality can do to a once promising story.

Tapia was done after the Ayala fight, maybe even before that. But I can understand coming back to make a buck.

Johnny Tapia is a hardcore drug abuser.......I'd say the chances are enormous that Tapia is dead broke.

Tapia has already been through it all.......the booze, the drugs, the gutter.......
I thought he had a chance to clean himself up when he found religioun, but he went right back to to drugs and then the gutter........

Sadly, I dont see things ending well for Tapia.
Its a pity but it happens everyday with people...... I give it a good chance that Tapia is just going to wipe himself out of the face of the earth or just rot away.:-(

I met Romero at the IBHOF where he was training for the Tapia fight. 97 I think.

Tapia was a favorite of mine.

No he has been past it for a while but he was still very good against Paulie(who was a very good fighter) the first fight could have gone either way, and i felt that Tapia was robbed in the 2nd fight. He was clearly on the downside when he fought Medina(a fight i thought Medina deserved).

I think Johnny should be allowed to fight as long as he is matched carefully, I think fighting tames him a little, Yey he still gets in trouble but not as bad as when he is not fighting at all.

Tapia's the one guy I'd make an exception to the "He shouldn't lace them up when he's no longer got it" logic that applies to so many (Holyfield, etc.)

It's the one thing that will keep him happy and focused (not to mention able to put something in his stomach). Even if he loses fight after fight...even if he gets stopped time after time...it's actually better than the alternative.

He may end up looking like Tyson on his last fight

Yeah I think IB put this perfectly. Tapia is a dude who needs to be preoccupied in order to make it through life. He's just a ****ing nut who probably isn't destined to live a normal life. A major hot head with a short fuse normally leads to some problems in the real world. I'd much prefer if he was working as a trainer but I'll take what I can get when it comes to crazy Tapia.

Well it was inevitable really. Of course he is past it but it keeps him out of serious trouble at least. He's only fighting a journeyman but he's so shot I could see him getting stopped again.
