Considering all the circumstances (his age, his layoff, moving up so high, and hurting his shoulder early) he didn't really look bad at all, and much better than expected. He virtually shut out Aguilera, and cleaned his clock in a few rounds. He's right in his self-assessment that his current level of power isn't going to cut it at heavyweight if he wants to score any knockouts. Yes, Aguilera is a shitty boxer and used a dumb strategy (playing against his strengths and trying to box and move with Tarver) but this was the right place to start. For a heavyweight debut, this wasn't the disaster many predicted it would be (some even picked Tarver to get KTFO in a minute flat). He should continue to elevate his level of competition, but take it slow. There's no need to rush into an Adamek or even Arreola confrontation just yet. Next I'd like to see him in with maybe the Rahman-Mormeck winner (which would either way be someone relatively close to his own age and size)
Anyone remember when Eddie M. Muhammad went from 175 to 201 pounds in 1981 to get pushed around by Renaldo Snipes on national TV? I wish I had a copy of that fight, but I don't.. It was before I had a VCR... Christ, Eddie M. Muhammad looked like a slob against the solid Snipes in that encounter.... Then Eddie dropped back down to 175 in a hurry to lose his WBA title to Michael Spinks... Dem were the good ol' days of weekend boxing.... MR.BILL
STILL! "Toney vs. Tarver" would sell in 2011... "The Lards of the Ring." Really though, its a good idea.... MR.BILL
I think he looks good, I'd like to see him in with Haye. Wlad and Vitali are too big for him. I'd also like to see him in with James Toney or Evander Holyfield.
He did a lot better than I expected because I promted him to lose or getting a mercy draw. But Aguilera did not make it hard for him, until the last round. But this guy is nowhere near the possibility to fight one of the major beltholders in the future. Even with the poor state HW is in right now.
Adamek will KTFO the milkdud. He is due for the beating Tomasz would have given him in sparring, way back in 2006.
This is just a con game for Tarver to line his pockets with a few more paydays. He is in cohoots(sp) with his network SHOWTIME. The network has a budget to pay fighters so why not waste it on one of their own. Partners in crime...
looked flabby and slow. but he held the weight very well for adding 50 pounds of bulk. should shed 10 pounds or so or add some muscle. other than that good performance.
His left shoulder. It didn't affect his ability to throw the southpaw uppercut, but keeping his arm held up by his chin or trying to extend it out high enough for a straight left was clearly agonizing. He also winced when he lifted it so they could put his robe on for the reading of the official decision. Basically any time he raised the arm above his hip it seemed to hurt.
he isn't going very far at heavyweight i can tell you that. he was slow, didn't throw much and when he did they were slow shots with not much power
17 months out of the ring. 46 pounds higher than any previous ring weight. Turning 42 in a month. 4th round shoulder injury. :hand
He looked physically like louis Gosset Jr. from diggstown or James the reaper Roper from the great white hype.
