Aired this morning on True4U. I had grand ambitions of getting up for the 5am EST session of Paris Olympics boxing and then doing the RBR for this - but overslept. I'm not that broken up about it.

The matchmaking for Thai pro boxers in general and members of the CP Freshmart stable in particular is, frankly, nothing short of cowardly. These guys will go from contending for a world title and losing, to licking their wounds by facing dozens of cab drivers literally making their pro debuts in a row.

This was the 77th professional bout for Petch/Salapat, and you could argue that other than his loss against Takuma Inoue he doesn't have a single world level step-up in class. In his last two defenses of the WBC Asian bantamweight title he faced green rookies in Chēnghào Luō and Tô Phi Vinh - both of whom gave him a concerning amount of difficulty. I have no idea how the Chinese challenger GuiMing Li qualified to challenged for the WBC Asian title, as he's coming off a draw and before that a loss. He came in today with a 6-5-1 record, and 1-3-1 in his last 5.

As for Petchmanee/Pradabsri, his résumé is leagues better just by dint of having twice beaten famous compatriot Chayaphon "Wanheng Meenayothin" Moonsri - but beyond that, his opposition has also been pretty poor. He was originally, and still as of yesterday, supposed to face Muay Thai kickboxing practitioner Marvin Dittrich but instead wound up facing this Iranian late sub.

Panya Pradabsri vs. Mehran Sadeghi, 6 rounds @ flyweight

 

Decent jab from the Iranian novice (0-1 ) but Pradabsri quickly asserts his dominance with level-changing jabs to body and head, and scores a few clean uppercuts.

10-9 Pradabsri

 

Target practice, kind of a "light spar" feel to it. Pradabsri jabbing from range and throwing fast short combos from range before drifting outside to reset. Sadeghi kept in retreat behind a high guard, trying to fend Pradabsri off with straight volleys but mostly hitting glove. Pradabsri does get clocked with a single chopping right hand in the final half minute while moving in to attack.

20-18 Pradabsri

 

Pradabsri turning up the heat in R3, stepping inside and snapping a hard crowbar jab between the wrists of Sadeghi, prying them apart. HARD right hand leads on the body from Pradabsri. Sadeghi hanging in there, and throwing enough backfoot flurries back at his assailant to show the ref he's defending himself, but Pradabsri starting to murder him downstairs with big hooks.

30-27 Pradabsri

 

Pradabsri jabbing into Sadeghi's face, then jerking away to slip a counter jab only to boomerang in and score again. Sadeghi hopelessly outclassed here. Pradabsri walking him down at times with just a hard body jab. Pradabsri bobs and weaves in and lands a looping right around the glove. Sadeghi goes down and bizarrely that's ruled a slip. Clear as day knockdown IMO. Sadeghi now getting desperate, throwing some windmills stepping in and then clinching. They trade 1-2s in the middle of the ring at mid-range, Pradabsri's harder, faster, and more accurate. Pradabsri also still mixing in heavy body shots. Pradabsri very measured and economical in his approach, spending long stretches watching for an opening while backing Sadeghi up.

40-36 Pradabsri

 

Pradabsri slips a jab and weaves his way in, then double taps Sadeghi with a left hook on his temple and then ribcage. Pradabsri with a straight right on the body. Some flick jabs up top keeping Sadeghi's hands up. Left hook on the body from Pradabsri. Sadeghi tries slipping his way inside past the Pradabsri jab to get off a 1-2 but gets countered to body and head. Pradabsri jabbing into the guard and then burying hard rights on the stomach. Pradabsri then jabs into the guard again, but now follows with an uppercut. Sadeghi wasn't expecting that shot, never saw it coming, and keels over backward, out cold.

Ridiculous this got sanctioned for Salapat's belt. And of course with all three judges Thai, lol. Nice job WBC.

Salapat hanging back, tossing right jabs at the head and straight lefts at the body. He occasionally swats with a right hook when they move close together. Pretty tepid stuff for the most part.

20-18 Salapat

 

Li blocking most of Salapat's punches at range, rolling in and sniping with a right hand when Salapat is retracting his arms. Exchanges on the inside, Salapat throwing more but not landing. Li drops his arms to slip punches with head movement and takes a grazing right hook along the underside of his jaw. They clinch. Low blow and headbutt at the same time by Salapat, ducking in to hurl an uppercut at the belt line. Ref pauses to have a doctor check out Li on the apron. He swabs the cut and gives the green light. Salapat aggressively steps in with hooks and Li shells up to block. 1-2 by Li. Another. Combo by Salapat blocked.
