Danny needs to be at his fastest for this. I hope he comes in at 16 stone like he did vs Grammer. He can beat Sexton if he puts his mind to it. I'd love to see one final hurrah and then retirement.
Faded Danny Williams plods on to another payday when he defends his British heavyweight title against Norwich surprise package Sam Sexton in London in February. Williams, 36, a pro since 1995 and a former world title challenger, should really have been stripped of his British belt after he failed to make it past the first stage of Prizefighter in October, going down twice in the first round against Sheffield’s blubbery Carl “The Fridge” Baker and dropping an embarrassing decision after three. (Baker was eliminated himself in the next stage.) Before that, Williams scraped home on a split decision against John McDermott to retain his British title and was hammered in eight rounds by manufactured Pole Albert Sosnowski, so he has lost two of his last three fights and the win was unconvincing. Once upon a time Danny was good enough to wear the label of “The Brixton Bomber”, flatten Mike Tyson in the States and challenge Vitali Klitschko for the WBA heavyweight title in Las Vegas but his star is most definitely falling fast. That is a nice way of saying he is ‘shot’. Sexton, however, looks seriously on the climb at 25 and earned this crack – along with his stripes - in two stirring encounters with Belfast hard man Martin Rogan, twice stopping the rugged, brawling Rogan in Belfast, a man who would have been fancied to beat the modern day Danny. Sexton can move and box and whack a bit, although Team Williams will argue that the last thing a fighter loses is his own punch and their man has always been a big puncher. Danny will also have weight (inevitably) on Sexton, having once weighed in at an astonishing 20st 8lbs. ‘Guess Danny’s weight’ competitions prior to his fights have proved livelier than his fights themselves in recent times. Williams has always been a horribly inconsistent fighter but inconsistency cannot blur form – fights, yes, but not form. Sexton outclassed Rogan last time out in November while Danny has been riding his luck for the last few years. He climbed off the floor three times to outlast Kazakhstani banger Konstantin Airich in seven rounds in Spain in 2008, much to the sour dismay of Airich's promoter Ahmet Oner. He also outlasted his heir apparent, burly Welshman Scott Gammer, in nine rounds in Wales to win back the British title in 2007, a title he first won with a dislocated shoulder against Mark Potter in 2000. When is he all out of miracles? One senses he is just cashing in on his name and his title before he retires. Sexton senses victory and the British title. He looks to have the youth and ability to unseat the champion.
According to this week's boxing news this is at the norfolk international showground near norwich. Chisora v mcdermott is for the english title. Fury had to vacate to have hand surgery.
When did Fury vacate the English title? Has he done that to go for the Irish title? What next, the Scottish title, then the Welsh? Big Mick will be saying he has cleaned up domestically after that :hey I'd like to see Fury vs Chisora actually...... Brook ought to be eyeing the EBU title after the Jennings fight I think.
TV situation is interesting. Cant see there being a Box Office PPV undercard Warren can piggyback on. Unless of course he delays it a month to March 13. Wouldnt be shocked would you?
He vacated due to injury wasn't stripped vacated. Something tells me that maybe he didn't fancy the job against McDermott.
