Tavoris Cloud vs. Adonis Stevenson: your thoughts and predictions?

Tavoris Cloud has a strong chin, probably better than Adonis Stevenson. I think he can survive Stevenson's onslaught and has a good chance of winning this, despite many people predicting an easy win for Adonis.

I'm rooting for the American over the Canadian in this one even though I'm Canadian, because Tavoris seems like a decent chap and some people have been too hard on him in the past.

Who are you rooting for, and who do you think will win?

I think it's a matter of inevitability that Cloud puts Stevenson to sleep, and given that Stevenson likes to make big first impressions there's no reason to expect it to be too far into the evening before we see that happen.

It's like this. Cloud has okay power. Stevenson has loads more. Cloud has an iron chin, however - and Stevenson has anything but. Not glass, but weak enough that all Cloud should have to do is tap it once and goodnight.

In analogous terms, I see it as basically like Deontay Wilder vs. Oliver McCall, hypothetically speaking. Sure, Wilder has crazy power, and certainly more h2h power than McCall. Is that power enough to crack McCall's famously sturdy chin? Maybe. Are you willing to gamble on that, however, knowing that all the heavy-handed McCall needs to do is blip Wilder clean on the jaw once to splatter him across the canvas?

Stevenson also isn't a very crafty, elusive guy, either. Guys that don't go after him - guess what? They're intimated by his power, and rightfully so. Cloud won't be...yes, maybe to his own detriment, but again...if there's a chance of it being a shootout the safer gamble is always on the guy with less power but still enough to knock out world class opponents in his division and far more resistance than his more thunderous foe. And that's sort of what I'm driving at - it will be a shootout, if not sooner then later. Lots of fans marvel at Stevenson's complete package of power and 'skills' - but it's smoke and mirrors. He isn't really that skilled. Fast, athletic - yes. He also does act slick, and likely fancies himself a boxer-puncher. Really, however, the guy can't box all that much better than even limited Cloud. He is another of those who gets by on natural athletic talent far more than grasp of the fundamentals. He goes through all the proper motions and his defense looks cute against opponents who are scared to come at him because of that big equalizer - but really, he isn't all that savvy. He is faster than Cloud and hits a good deal harder (which is saying a mouthful, as Cloud is among the strongest and biggest hitting light heavies) - but he lacks the defense and temperament not to get into a tussle with him at some point...and since he's a bit of a front runner and riding high on confidence with the Dawson mauling, I'm looking for him to just try and run over Cloud like a freight train in the opening minute. Both men will connect, and...

If Stevenson decided to game plan around Cloud gassing and box from a distance to bide his time - I still don't think he is skilled or smart enough to do so and even the basic pressure of Cloud will force a moment of honesty upon Stevenson, and that will be the end. So if not the 1st, then some time in the first half of the scheduled distance (because it's after that point Cloud's tank might get a little suss and both men probably know it) but I think Adonis is just dumb enough to go for the quick rip-off-the-Band-Aid route and get it over with so he doesn't need to deal with all that.

Would you agree that Stevenson possesses the artificial, pseudo "skill" and "slickness" that fools a lot of fans?

He reminds me to a tee of Grzegorz Proksa. Herky jerky movement without real purpose, lead arm low, with a facade of" skills" that are actually just natural athletic talents on display befuddling low level opposition. That **** didn't fly when faced with even a rudimentary skilled boxer in Sergio Mora.

Proksa even has the deceiving win over a formerly good fighter in Sylvester... That Stevenson mirrors in his blowout of more than likely used up physically and especially mentally Chad Dawson.

Yes, precisely - except that I think Proksa boxes even more skillfully and effectively than Stevenson in his unconventional style despite being self-taught. Stevenson looks the part of a fancy boxer without having any of the correct instincts to be one. If Dawson weren't so fragile and had been able to hang in mentally and physically under those rockets' glare, he would have doled out a literal boxing lesson and the contrast between real and facade skill would have been strikingly obvious.

Proksa wastes too much energy but usually with at least some end purpose other than mobile posing, which is all Adonis seems to be doing when not hurling those crackling thunderbolts which are in truth all he really has going for him.

It's shocking how gullible and unobservant fans are. I bet if we made a poll right now asking whom is the skilled pressure fighter and whom the limited slugger, a majority would tab Matthysse as the latter and Stevenson as the former. :-(

I think highest probability is Cloud knocking Stevenson out early.

Next highest is Stevenson knocking out Cloud early, which should upgrade his power index from "f'n scary" big as it seems now to "what the ****, he can one-hit guys with iron chins? :blood" big, which is still an unknown.

Third highest is Stevenson getting the knockout - or TKO - late, as Cloud tires from chasing him all night and getting hit with bombs in the process. Maybe Cloud gets stopped wobbling on his feet or something.

Fourth highest is Stevenson running scared all night and never looking to land big, instead using his discount bin slick defense and superior athleticism to avoid the, let's face it, rather slow and uncreative Cloud.

Fifth, dead last, is Cloud on points. That simply isn't happening...unless we get something like the aforementioned fourth-most-likely scenario, with the exception that Stevenson makes too many errors in judgment and maneuvers into enough shots to get dropped a few times to give Cloud an in on the cards. (yet never cleanly enough to be put to sleep) ...quite a stretch of the imagination.

...but Dawson has questions surrounding his punch resistance from very early on, whereas Cloud hasn't.

Also, how does getting schooled by Hopkins and Campillo suggest he will be knocked out by Stevenson? :huh Your argument for an outcome is two guys with completely different styles getting a completely different outcome?

Cloud is beatable by boxers, yes, everyone gets that by now. Stevenson is no master boxer. He is a big puncher. A bigger puncher than Cloud. Difference is, Cloud is able to withstand a lot more than Stevenson can.

With all due respect to our departed friend the late great Emanuel Steward, he didn't always get 'em right when scouting latent talent. :nono Plenty of his "next big things" - including ones he coached hands-on - went bust over the years.
