The former champion said he underestimated Pavlik in

    September.
Jermain Taylor said he underestimated Kelly Pavlik in their first fight. On Thursday, he vowed it wouldn’t happen again.
“It’s a shame to say it, but it took a butt-kicking to get me back on track,” Taylor said in a conference call to reporters. “It was a wake-up call.
“Right now, I feel like I’m at the top of my game. Can’t nobody beat me when I’m at the top of my game.”
Taylor (27-1-1), who fill fight Pavlik in a rematch on Feb. 16 in Las Vegas, said underestimating Pavlik led him to go easy during training camp in August and September. That lackluster approach left him vulnerable in the later rounds, he said.
“I should have trained harder,” said Taylor, who lost his middleweight championship when he was knocked out in the seventh round. “My mind wasn’t right. I was the world champion and it was just a different mindset.
“This training camp, it’s all work. I’ll be honest with you — it wasn’t like that the last camp.”
His comments were interesting in light of his pre-fight comments in September, when he trained with Hall of Famer Emanuel Steward in isolation in the Poconos. Taylor told reporters before that fight that he had been training eight or nine hours a day, six days a week and was in the best shape of his life.
That contradiction wasn’t lost on the Pavlik camp.
“From what we heard, from the conference calls and the media and from the great Emanuel Steward, Taylor had his best camp up in the Poconos,” Pavlik’s trainer Jack Loew said. “Now we hear about how hard he’s training.
“If that’s the case, so be it. We know what type of shape we’re in.”
Taylor said he’s been getting up early each morning to run five miles, then sparring for 12 rounds or more each day to build endurance. He said he wasted a lot of energy throwing “stupid punches” during the second round of the first fight, when he knocked Pavlik down but couldn’t finish him.
By the sixth round, he was spent, Taylor said.
“I was beating this guy half-[butt],” Taylor said. “In the later rounds, I went into survival mode. I was tired. I didn’t do what I was supposed to do in training camp.
“This time I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to do. I lost what it took to become world champion.”
Although Taylor was a big favorite in the first fight, he had been criticized by observers for lackluster showings in his previous three title defenses. To that end, Taylor fought more aggressively against Pavlik, looking to prove doubters wrong with an impressive victory.
This time, he’s prepared to go the distance and isn’t worried about winning by knockout.
“I’m just trying to go in there and win this fight,” Taylor said. “I’m not trying to prove nothing to nobody. It’s all about me this time. I just want to go in there and make this boy look like nothing.
“I was beating him [on the judges’ cards] on just half-[butt]. Imagine what’s going to happen this fight.”
Big talk aside, Taylor did indicate a few times that he respected Pavlik’s ability. And it’s not just lip-service — putting in the extra work shows he knows he can’t enter next weekend’s fight unprepared.
“He comes straightforward and he comes to fight,” Taylor said of Pavlik. “He was at his best [last time]. And I wasn’t.
“In the sport of boxing, you’re not supposed to take anything for granted because anything can happen in the ring. It’s all about being in shape. A person can win the fight just by being in shape. Kelly proved it.”

Give me a break--manny told the world that Taylor was in the best shape of his life and that the poconos was the reason--now hes saying he wasnt in good shape and he is now? Ok--I guess..:-( .

"A person can win the fight just by being in shape. Kelly proved it."
Man, if a poster over here started a thread stating that as being the reason Pavlik beat Taylor, we'd have our "dumbest thread of the year award" winner right there.

I wouldn't doubt he's in or around the "best shape of his life", but all that training can go out into the air come fight night. Plan A fails, and you better be ready to go to Plan B-C-D-etc. I remember they were talking about him being in great shape for the first fight and him having no troubles getting down to 160. I think the statement about "A person can win the fight just by being in shape" is ridiculous...Kelly won that fight with pure heart, skill, and power....not by hitting a tire. I wish both of them luck, but my analysis of the two fighters and the last fight still have me picking Pavlik over Taylor.

Furthermore, if being in shape was based on Kelly's stamina, then this is something that can't be fixed in one training camp. Some boxers aren't very big on roadwork or doing enough of it. It's the greatest way to keep up a good stamina. I'm sorry to say but if you're a world class fighter and are gassed out after the 2nd round then you have serious issues with stamina that won't be fixed by the rematch. If Taylor gases himself out again, will he go back into survival mode? This is a 12 round fight, he's not in the amatuers anymore.

Anyone know what Manny Stewart is saying about Taylor's claims of undertraining for fight #1? Is Manny saying anything about the upcoming fight?

But if you are a natural sprinter, no amount of roadwork wll turn you into an endurance athlete. Some fighters just have more talent for stamina than others and Pavlik seems to have tons of it. Taylor will never match him in stamina, just like a decent runner will never beat an African world record runner. For every athletic ability, there is genetic potential in a person that can be reached but not exceeded.

Former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor, the man who finally toppled the lengthy reign of Bernard “the Executioner” Hopkins, can’t wait for his highly anticipated rematch with Kelly “the Ghost” Pavlik – the man who smeared his perfect record with a seventh-round knockout last year. He vows that the February 16th rematch held in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be much different: “If I get him in that position again, I’m going to finish him. It’s all about revenge.”
Taylor says that he has increased his sparring much more for the rematch than the initial bout. He has done his roadwork rather than shirk training responsibilities. He expresses confidence that his increased conditioning will enable his superior skill to take over and win the bout. “He doesn’t do anything better than I do,” Taylor says of his opponent. “He comes to fight and is strong. But, he was at his best last time and I wasn’t.”

The former champion says that if he nearly crushed Pavlik the first time around when he was not in top condition, imagine the outcome when he is fully prepared and finely conditioned. “I got too comfortable last time around and he capitalized on it,” he says. “This time I’m in tip-top shape and can go 12 rounds easy. I didn’t go 12 rounds in the gym sparring last time. Now it is different. There is nothing like the feeling knowing you are in shape.”

The Taylor camp expressed displeasure at comments of Pavlik’s trainer Jack Loew who referred to Nelson being responsible for Taylor’s amateurish style and mistakes. Nelson responded: “They refer to Jermain’s bad habits from the amateurs. Well, they are the same bad habits that kept Kelly from making the Olympic team [referring to Taylor’s victory in the Olympic Trials].”

DiBella was more vocal: “The Pavlik people are very confident, bordering on cockiness. … I think they should remember the second round. … Kelly deserves all the credit [for the victory] but it could have easily ended in the 2nd round. I believed then and I believe now that I promote the better fighter and on February 16th, the last fight will be erased and the result will be different.”

Both Nelson and DiBella referred to Pavlik’s nickname of “the Ghost,” adding that “We will be the Ghostbusters.

JT says he’s prepared to go the distance and isn’t worried about winning by knockout.

I don't know if JT is really thinking about going the distance or not. In 2 or 3 other interviews he seemed to indicate that he was focused on getting a KO. He has made the statement "I almost had him out of there" so many times I became convinced he would come in gunning for an early KO. If Jermain tries to box and move for 12 rounds, he will last longer than the 5 rounds I've been predicting. However, Pavlik will still KO him.

During the first fight Taylor was never able to consistently slip Kelly's jab. Kelly uses the jab to set up the right hand. A simple 1-2, and a double-jab followed by the right hand are Pavlik's most effective and dangerous moves. If Taylor can't slip the jab, he'll catch the right hand all night long.

Ozell Nelson is Taylor's head trainer this time, as everyone knows. Ozell is JT's original trainer from his early days. In other words, it was Ozell who allowed Taylor to develop his worst habits: holding the left to low, and going straight back when he gets stung. JT has been doing those things for years. One training camp, headed up by the very man who allowed Jermain to develop those bad habits, will not correct them. The low left hand provides Pavlik with a built in home for the right lead, and Pavlik has one of the best lead rights in the business. Even if JT comes in holding the left up where it belongs, Pavlik will still find opportunites to hurt him, and when Taylor gets hurt, he will revert to his old-self. If he had 2 or 2 fights to work things out, it might be a different story, but one training camp headed up by Ozell just isn't enough.

Simply put, JT cannot out box "The Ghost" over 12 rounds. However, we ought to keep in mind that if Jermain sees the opening bell for the 10th round, he will have accomplished something that no fighter before him has.

Pavlik will keep that ram-rod jab in JT's face all night like last time.

Once Kelly starts landing those beautiful straight rights, JT will remember what happened last time and he'll fold.

I was a fan of Taylor's going into the first fight, but my support is waning.
He is a little baby and if you watch the 1st fight again, you can see his wife and all their friends yelling and pointing at the Pavlik supporters during the 2nd round.

I loved it when Pavlik stopped JT in th end, they had nothing to say.

    Pavlik KO8 Taylor.

So whats he gonna do? RUN all night like a *****? Or try to outbox Kelly? Yeah, that'll work!

He don't know what he's saying cause he's so nerveous, his ass is mixed up with his brains. Or maybe he's trying to get KP off his game with comments like this? Well, that **** won't work with Kelly, cause he's a smart fighter & Taylor's an idiot grasping for straws.

    ((((((((((GO KELLY GO))))))))))))
