It was a very entertaining fight. It was also a very competitive fight that Chavez was always in with a chance of winning...
But Taylor was clearly comfortably ahead going into the final round so he needed a knockout to win it in my view.

And he got it (sort of).

I scored it in the FOTW thread @mrkoolkevin refers to and I stand by that scorecard.

Yes, that was screwed up advice. I don't have a clue why Duva and Benton gave those instructions. Even if they were suspicious of getting robbed on the scorecards, they should have realized by his condition that he didn't have much in the tank left. Better to err on the side of caution.

Judging by what came after for the Taylor, and recent headlines, that fight has haunted Taylor ever since.... It's too bad to lose a fight like that but, it happened for a reason. You have to give Julio credit for what he was doing throughout the fight. Took me years to accept that....

I watched that fight many times including as it happened, Chavez was going to the body and the head when he could, he chopped Taylor down, piece by piece, and broke him by the later rounds, Taylor was swallowing too much of his own blood at that point, he was already a broken fighter, who cares how many punches landed by taylor, Chavez broke him Mentally and definitely Physically by the end and Taylor went down and he never responded to the ref's questions and even looked away at the last critical seconds before it was stopped, and his career and future was over at that point in time, no matter what he did afterwards for a short time, Chavez physically destoryed him, so yes he Won the fight with or without the stoppage, he destroyed taylor.

My opinion is Steele saw 1st exactly what had been happening to Taylor through the last rounds especially, swallowing his own blood, his body being beaten to a total pulp, no way he was letting him get back into it to get hit even 1 more time unless he fully responded to him and he did not, so I think that's why he did it right away as he knew it was over, I do believe him when he says he was caught up in the moment and had no clue of the exact time, even with the light on to show him, if you watch the Ref, he never even glances at the light that informs him how much time was left, good stoppage no matter if he did it slowly or super fast, it's a shame it happened in the closing seconds yes.

Agree with you. Changed my mind over the years about certain aspects of this fight. There has been one constant, though: I thought back in '90, and I still think, motormouth Duva was SOLELY responsible for Taylor's defeat. The man was a shameless clown. What was he thinking jumping onto the ring apron at such a critical moment?

Loved this post. Steele to my eye DOES seem in an awful hurry to stop the fight. Not accusing him of being corrupt. Accusing him, rather, of being very inconsistent. Where was the concern for Hearns when Barkley nearly punched him through the canvas?

I agree completely, and I'm a Chavez fan. Something is very iffy about the way Steele stopped the fight. Barely gave Taylor any time to answer, didn't have him step forward and just seemed determined to call it off once Taylor hit the floor. A horrible, horrible call, in my opinion -- robbing a fighter of a career-defining win based on either corruption or incompetency.

As i've said before Lucian Bute was in worse shape than Taylor was, when he got floored by Andrade at the end of the 12th round. Bute got up unsteadily the ref waved the fight on, the bell rung and that was the end of the fight.

People make out like Chavez was on the verge of killing Taylor, i've always thought people exaggerate Taylor's condition. Yes he was hurt and yes he was dazed, but as others have pointed out Steele seemed in a hurry to stop the fight, and never really gave Taylor a chance to answer.

Put it this way if Chavez had been beating Taylor, and got dropped in the final round with seconds left. Would the referee of acted the same way ? or would he of rightly gave Chavez a chance to carry on ? considering the nature of the fight and how important it was ?

Chavez fan, like yourself. I think Duva's hysterical intervention cost Taylor this fight. At the same time I think Steele appears startlingly eager to end things. He acts as though there is a gun pressed to the back of his skull. Again, not saying he was corrupt. I don't know what went down. I do know this: Steele previously let brutalised fighters go back in there for further punishment. Hearns was out on his feet after Barkley knocked him down the first time, and he allowed Rosario to take a frightening shellacking at the hands of Chavez. I'm all for the referee intervening to prevent needless pain and injury. But when a referee is not consistent in this regard it makes you wonder...

A thrilling thought-provoking and - ultimately - very dark event.

I had it 107-102 to Taylor going into the final round. Even with the knockdown in the 12th, I didn’t have a way for Chavez to win on the cards. He got lucky and Taylor got unlucky.

Taylor suffered a broken eye socket, broken ribs, badly busted up face, had a lot of blood pumped from his stomach, was ****ing blood for weeks and was in hospital for almost 2 weeks following the fight. His condition is not exaggerated.
