Exactly He had talked about moving up for years I remember after the first Catterall fight he said he'd only do the rematch at 147 Then proceeded to fight Lopez, Catterall and Essuman at 140 Taylor and his team knew that he'd have little chance at beating Ennis, Crawford/Spence pre fight, and even guys like Barrios, Rocha, Norman and Stanionis would be hard Not even like Essuman is a big money fight at 140
He was afraid to move up He wasn't confident he could beat the big dogs at 147 with his one dimensional stand in the middle of the ring grinding style
Ya it's funny how when it comes to Taylor people on here bring up the opponents accolades but with Crawford they don't use that standard for Julius Idongo who was a unified champion I happen to not think Idongo was all that but a little consistency would be nice
No way. In no order Postol Spence - PBC/Showtime hype job Gamboa - huge size mismatch. Crawford 7lbs heavier with a 9'' reach advantage. Gamboa was a 126/130 pounder whose form is trash at 135 Madrimov - razor-close, arguably lost Burns - Would've been coming off B2B loses if not for corruption and extreme good fortune. He lost to Beltran and was down 84-87 on all three judge's cards in his backyard with 3 rounds left to go vs Jose A Gonzalez but the later suffered a freak arm/wrist injury and had to retire in his corner
Debatable. Postol might be better. Beating Postol in your 13th fight >> beating Porter in your 26th 13 + 13 = 26 Half the amount of fights And a 7-0 Taylor administered a biblical ass whoopin to a 26-2-1 Porter in Porter's own gym
Tbf, I do think Porter is a better win for Crawford than Postol - Madrimov it remains to be seen after he lost to Ortiz Jr it took a bit of the shine off it for Bud. I think it was clear that Prograis was seen as a better win at the time than Postol, same with Ramirez, but both those guys have went on the same trajectory as Taylor himself since they lost, which has had an 'aged like milk' effect on Taylors resume. There is an argument that Spence and Taylor have another thing in common - IMO they were both clearly changed fighters after a key event - Taylor after coming off the rails post-Undisputed, and Spence after the car accident. No one can really ever say for sure exactly how much those things affected them both, but they 100% had a noticable effect IMO.
Re. Indongo. He's packing more glass in his whiskers than a bottle bank. I did an extensive breakdown of his opponents and it's genuinely hard to think of another world champion, let alone a unified one who fought as many featherfists as him With the exception of Troyanovsky who was a legit big puncher Indongo was stopped by everyone he fought who could punch a bit and Troyanovsky didn't land a single punch He went 2-9 after getting stopped by Crawford, 6 of said loses via stoppage, 5 in 4 rounds or less
Postol's record against 140 pounders might be better than Spence's record against 140 pounders. Spence might have even fought more 140 pounders than Postol did And Taylor took the zeros of JCR, Rougarou, Baranchyk, Martin, Catterall (controversial) Ohara, Khongsong and six of those zeros in B2B fights
The Porter who Crawford fought was literally coming off double hip replacement surgery so that depreciates the win. At least Postol, unlike a whole bunch of Crawford's wins, was able-bodied Yes. I think a 12-0 Taylor fighting Rougarou, Postol, and Ramirez like a man >> Crawford running like a thief in the night from Postol True.
