Trainer Ozell Nelson will assume the head trainer duties for former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor, replacing Hall of Famer Emanuel Steward. Nelson was Taylor's amateur coach and was a key camp member throughout Taylor's career. "Manny is a great coach, a Hall of Famer," Nelson told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. "I very much respect Emanuel Steward. But I feel like things were going real good in training camp, but when we got to the fight, there was a communication problem. I don't know why there were the breakdowns [during the fights]. Sometimes fighters and trainers just don't click." :think
It may or maynot be the fault of Jermaine or Manny but often after some bad looking outings two close knit people like Manny and Jermaine feel like they are not gelling, its probably something they both cant put thier finger on, but a change is often good for both.. I wish Ozell the best of luck he might click with Jermaine, he is very talented and this may just refresh his love for the game..
Good news for jermain. However, no matter what trainer he has, Taylor still has that bad tendency to drop that left hand and stick out his chin. Hes done it throughout his whole career and its finally catching up with him when he fights hard punching opponents. Therefore, no matter what trainer he gets its ultimately up to taylor to "fix" that problem.
Sometimes they dont. Which leads to questions when you fix what isnt necessarily broken as in the case of leaving Nelson in the first place. If you the fighter are doing the right things ais what matters most :good Bottom line the experiment didnt work, Steward seems to be working much more effectively with Cintron and should put his focus there:yep Taylor needs to be everything he can be, and getting down to business. Pavlik who STUCK with his trainer and would even with a LOSS, needs to heal his cut hand, and get back in the rhythym. Apparently Taylor's looking for a way to win.
I have had questions about some of the stuff I heard Manny say to JT in the corner. He told Taylor "He's not used to fighting at this pace. Your conditioning is wearing him down." WTF! Pavlik throws 80-100 punches per round every time out, and always presses the action. Later he told JT; "He's ready to go. You can see it coming." He said that at a time when Kelly was getter stronger and timing Taylor better with each round. Getting better as the fight progresses is also normal for Pavlik. He also told Taylor he was losing the fight when JT was ahead on all score cards. Hell ... I'm probably the biggest Pavlik nuthugger on this board, and even I had Taylor ahead by 1 point going into the 7th round. Look at Stewart's comments again "Your conditioning is wearing down." "He's ready to go. you can see it coming." "You're losing the fight." In other words Manny told JT he was winning but losing. WTF! Manny is a great trainer, so it would be very hard to believe that he failed to do his homework on Pavlik, but man it sure looks that way. Could it be that he believed all the pre-fight trash he talked about Pavlik being a bum, et, and really did not understand what they were up against? Nevertheless, I think the immediate rematch is a mistake. No matter who trains Taylor, he will not beat Pavlik. JT would be better off letting it go, and moving on with his career. Move up to 168, fight a couple 2nd tier guys, and then go after a title. Wait fot Pav to move up, and give himself a few fights to work on his flaws, and rebuild his confidence. Boo
Manny doesn't have all the answers. As a matter of fact, for such an expert, at times he sounds like a dumb ****, himself. And Taylor couldn't adapt & implement a plan 'B' if his life depended on it. So as far as I see, the rematch will end with the same results. Maybe even more brutal...if thats possible. (((((((((((GO KELLY GO ))))))))))))
It should!! Yet, take nothing for GRANTED at this level. Remember it came close in round two. Pavlik wins this and looks impressive? It'll continue to propel him into THE mega match ups and all that comes with it. Get back to doing the same **** that got ya here. I'm a believer and want to see a guy who's earned it get his OPPORTUNITIES:good
