That's a good post. You bring up some valid technical points unlike a lot of the other trolls around here who would have replied "omg Caleno kfto ggg lol, ydksab". I sure wish Canelo would see it the same way as you do, because from where I'm standing he's done a lot of roadwork to get away from Golovkin. Fingers crossed that this really is some sort of master plan for a GGG showdown in 2017, and not 2070.
Canelo did state in retrospect that the catchweight affected him. I don't think anyone would dispute that trying to make 152 affected Canelo’s performance and his comfort level approaching the fight. He wasn't 100% drained, but he was certainly drained to an extent. Regardless of how drained he was, it was an attempt by Floyd Mayweather to weaken Canelo, and Floyd tried to decieve the public by suggesting that Canelo wanted the catchweight. Clearly, Floyd did not want Canelo to be at his best, a stark contrast to what Floyd professed in the build up to Cotto where he said he wanted Cotto to be at his best so their were no excuses. Floyd said how he don't do catchweights and brought up how Cotto was drained due to Pacquiao's catchweight and that he still considered Cotto an undefeated fighter because of it. MVC, there's no defending your boy here. Him needing a catchweight vs Canelo really put a damper on what could have been a signature win. Unfortunately, the fight was marred in controversey due to the catchweight, because Canelo wasn't at his best, and many of us still consider him an undefeated fighter (for reasons out of Floyd's own mouth). Even at 152, Canelo managed a majority decision on Floyd in a boxing chess match and earned his respect.
That's part of it, but it's also that Floyd respects Canelo for what he's done for boxing and how he carries himself in and out of the ring. Floyd likes Canelo's style and his ring generalship, and like he said after their 2013 bout, knows that Canelo is the future of boxing. He favors Canelo over GG because he knows Canelo is battle tested and knows that he can adapt to any style and is more of a cerebrally skilled boxer than Golovkin. So yeah, sure Floyd wants Canelo to beat Golovkin, because it makes him look better. But it's more than that. He wouldn't just say that if he wasn't challenged by Canelo in 2013 in a way that no other boxer has done before. Floyd knows that Canelo is as close as any of his opponents have come to being his equal, and sees Canelo as "The One" who he handed the torch to, to take over boxing as its #1 star now that he is retired from the sport.
Why is he talking about him in the first place then? he's commented on GGG multiple times now. GGG is unbeaten with the best KO% in boxing and is being talked about by many as top 5 world's best p4p. I don't think FMW is threatened though, as you said, he's an all time great. But I do think he's irritated by the hype (justified or not) surrounding GGG
Exactly what it is IMO Floyd will always look to stay relevant. This is just a way to keep him relevant and to make himself look good
Settle down no matter how many atg's you connect to pbf he could never beat ggg. Canelo beating GGG is a joke.
Then why did he say that canelo shouldn't be pushed to fight ggg at such a young age. He is a pathetic little man trying to protect his greatest win from meaning nothing after ggg rips canela to pieces with ease.
I think you nailed it. What's going to happen is that Floyd will make a big comeback ... and get beaten by some mediocrity because he's so old and rusty. His ego won't let him shaddup.
It's not a joke Canelo has beaten better fighters than GGG has that's fact. PBF started at 130, GGG is a career MW congrats!
