I think most people can agree Mayweather is not TBE. But, was it ever possible for Mayweather to become TBE given the level of opponents he could face in his career? Or was the opportunity there for him, and he never took it?
Yeah, maybe to casual fans. I realize that many posters on here only started watching boxing in the last 3 years, so Floyd is all they know. Most of us actual watched Floyd in his true prime, and realized, that though brilliant, there were a number of guys in history better. If you wanna just talk the lighter weights, Whitaker and Duran in their respective primes were both a level above Floyd.
Nothing is impossible but it would be highly infeasible in this day and age for anyone to pass the career of Ray Robinson.
Mayweather had the natural God given boxing talent to raked up there alongside Ali, Robinson etc but he did not make full use of it. For whatever reasons you believe he ducked away from any fighter he feared he might not beat. Prime Pacquaio, Margarito, Williams ,Tszyu etc You cannot rate anything due to May 2 that was a complete & utter con job A seriously injured fighter taking on SCARED fighter. Don't forget it was his own Father/trainer that called him scared At his best he would never be TBE but he could have been very close, As it is he isn't even the fighter of the era. That honor was rightfully bestowed on Manny Pacquaio In a way I feel sorry for Floyd because his legacy will not be anywhere near what it could have been
although you are a Floyd nutthugger, I have to agree with this, the TBE of the history boxing is a personal opinion, nothing more, Floyd proved he's TBE of his era and that's all he had to prove
It's hard to not be disappointed with his career. He's a guy who by all means, should be widely considered one of the very best to ever lace em up. I've said it before, but I think in terms of ability, he's top 10 all time. I think if he fought and beat Bradley, prime Pacquiao, Margarito, prime Cotto, and Hatton at 140, he'd be considered top 20 all time.
As much as people criticize who he fought and when, I have a hard time naming a current fighter with a better resume. He's the best of this era, and maybe that's good enough.
The short answer is no. Yeah, unfortunately for Floyd, even if he didn't have the misses that he does, there just aren't enough ATG's or HOF'ers in this era to get him to be TBE. TBE isn't the best solely off of skill, it's also his contemporaries skillsets and how they were able to handle them.
