His fight against Battling Torres is probably my favorite performance from Ortiz.

And here’s a vicious display of offense by Ortiz.

His exact words were: “STRICTLY THEORY” but he may have been poisoned.

That’s not recalling from memory. Look up the word theory, or do you need your hand held?

That’s what I responded to — someone who cooked up a conspiracy theory because he wanted to reject a legitimate result from a fight, when there’s absolutely no substance to make one conclude that — Ortiz never claimed it, he didn’t faint and end up in the hospital with a bunch of doctors scratching their heads over how he could be in this shape ... he just got beat.

Uncrowned lightweight champ for years before Joe Brown eventually fought him. Dave Charnley got 2 shots at Brown, despite being soundly outpointed by Ortiz in Charnley’s home city.

Man, Len Matthews, one of the hottest prospects around. That was one severe lacing along the ropes.

I remember reading Ortiz saying some stuff happened that upset him to much to talk about 40 years later. It wasn’t totally uncommon to fight in some of boxing’s backwaters and get “poisoned”. There were attempts on Jofre in Venezuela and Philippines for example around this era. I think, personally Ortiz probably just about peaked. He was masterful vs. Laguna in the prior fight but he was older and maybe it all caught up on him.

I'm curious too because I remember the same thing. Reading something, I mean. And Ortiz mentioning that he didn't want to talk about the Teo Cruz fight during the filmed interview he did when working as a taxi driver in the 80s. I know he didn't train and was in poor shape for the fight and had been a functioning alcoholic pretty much for years. So it's possible he just aged overnight, especially with his struggles to make the weight. Like you say, he'd looked great against Laguna not too long prior. He was a bit of a spouter offer too and quick to make excuses so I could see him blowing a situation out of proportion if he felt hard done by. But yeah, food poisoning as a possibility isn't that uncommon like you say in some parts of the globe. I got moaned at for repeating the same suspicions about Galaxy in Thailand mentioned several times on here by reputable posters without inferring it was true.
