Enzo Maccarinelli teaming up again for another glory shot at new weight

ENZO Maccarinelli has called on the man that helped made him a world champion as he looks to rebuild his career at light-heavyweight level.
Maccarinelli is reuniting with Enzo Calzaghe as he tries out at a new weight.
Following months of thinking over his future following the seventh-round defeat to Alexander Frenkel in September, Maccarinelli this week revealed he will be returning to the ring — but not at the weight that saw him become the WBO cruiserweight king.
Instead, Maccarinelli will join a light-heavyweight division containing former Team Calzaghe stablemate Nathan Cleverly as he hopes to resurrect his career.

And the 30-year-old, who has ignored pleas from various boxers and pundits to call it a day, insists Calzaghe is the right man to put him back on track.
The switch means Maccarinelli will now work full-time with Calzaghe, though Bolton-based trainer Karl Ince will still have some involvement.
"I understand where I went wrong against Frenkel," said Maccarinelli. "When I watch the tape back I'm thinking 'what the heck am I doing?'
"People say I boxed well, but they were wrong. I fought well — there is a difference — but I was throwing wild shots when I should have been working my jab.
"Karl told me going into the seventh round to keep it simple and work the jab, but I didn't listen.
"If Enzo would have told me that then I would have listened. That's no criticism of Karl, he agreed I should be working with Enzo again.
"But Enzo commands respect, he will train the heck out of me and, most importantly, get the best out of me.
"He helped me become a world champion before and he knows what I'm about.
"He phoned me up after the Frenkel fight and asked me what the heck I was doing throwing those punches.
"He said it wasn't me in there, and he was right."
The new adventure for Maccarinelli sees him campaign at light-heavyweight level.
There has been no mention of a possible debut at that weight yet, but Maccarinelli is set to start training in Calzaghe's Newbridge gym in a few weeks.
"I can't wait to start training with Enzo," said Maccarinelli. "The long road back starts here, and we're both relishing it."

Lets hope Enzo Cal talks him into retirement.I cant say a bad word about big Mac as a bloke. His intentions as a fighter are good but he is shot.I cant see Enzo Calzaghe letting him fight to be honest.I hope Im right.

Has a fighter moving down (or back down) a weight division at the end of his career ever worked? Jones/Mundine/Byrd etc.

It's not like Calzaghe Sr wasn't in charge for knockout losses as well. This is not some magic touch, he's offered his advice (and Enzo has listened) and it still got Enzo knocked out.

I just hope, basically, that Enzo's entire hopes aren't banking on this. I am genuinely worried because you simply can't take the knockout losses he's had and just breeze along as good as before.

Enzo strikes me as the type of guy that in training his defence etc would be pretty good but kinda looses it in the ring. If he can follow a game plan would do ok.

Obviously his chin isnt the best but its more the shots he get caught clean with than how good his chin is.

Imo in the year between when he fought haye to when he fought afolabi he should have fought twice against durable guys and go the distance and regain a bit of confidence and get some rounds in rather than fighting only Ellis. I suppose hindsight is a great thing!

If he could keep to a game plan and just used his skills instead of going for the ko I am pretty sure he could beat both Bellew and Cleverly.

Moving to 175 is crazy, not sure what going back with Enzp Calzaghe would prove either...

Macc should give it up.

Really dont want to see enzo at 175lbs, and it would gut me to see the likes of Bellew and cleverly beating him at this stage....

I think Enzo Calzahge will have a positive effect on Macc - in that someone so close to him who has known him so long will see how far gone he is and be able to persuade it to call it a day .

Enzo has suffered several brutal KO's in just the last 3 years - he's completely finished at even British and Euro level but he cant accept it and it will take some one like Enzo calzahge to tell him straight .

Does a weight drained 175 enzo macc really expect to have more resiliance and punch resistance at 30 yrs old after too many bad KO's ? Its madness and someone needs to step and intervene for Maccs own sake - he needs saving from himself.

Back in Newbridge is the only way I see Enzo doing anything.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather he left it there, but for me this is the best of a bad situation.
