Team Wilder rejecting the DAZN $100 million AJ fight deal in 2019 was a massive blunder

The problem is, Wilder never really fought for some big purse, outside of the Fury 2 and 3 fights. And as far as i remember Fury 3 PPV was bad.
So declining that offer was terrible move.

No it wasn't. It was always 100m.+ for fighting his "mandatory" Breazele and 2 fights with AJ.

Finkel's an absolute moron. He squandered billions of other people's cash via SFX during the EDM boom that even the biggest fool in the music industry could see was stupid as he was doing it.

I would not be so confident. Remember Quilling turning down his then career high purse vs Korobov? He even gave up his WBO belt.
He then went on to fight Jacobs for slightly less money and that was pretty much the end of his career.

And there is plenty of evidence that suggest the DAZN deal was more than just propaganda.

Wilder and his team met with DAZN executive chairman John Skipper in New York last Tuesday to discuss a deal that would have led to a showdown for the undisputed heavyweight world championship with unified titleholder Anthony Joshua as long as Wilder and Joshua won interim bouts. Wilder's ninth title defense against Breazeale likely will take place on May 18 at Barclays Center and Joshua will make his United States debut in his seventh defense against Jarrell "Big Baby" Miller on June 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

DAZN offered Wilder two versions of a deal from which he could pick, two sources with knowledge of the offers told ESPN.

One deal, the sources said, was for three fights worth $100 million. The first fight would have been a $20 million payday to fight Breazeale this spring, which is way over the market value for that level fight. Wilder was guaranteed $10 million to fight Fury in their exciting draw on Showtime PPV on Dec. 1. The second fight would have been for $40 million to fight Joshua in the fall for the undisputed title with the third fight being an immediate rematch with Joshua for another $40 million -- even if Wilder, in the worst-case scenario, had gotten knocked out, even in the first round, of the first fight by Joshua (22-0, 21 KOs), 29, of England.

The second version of the offer, one of the sources said, would have paid Wilder $20 million to fight Breazeale, $40 million for the Joshua fight, a $20 million fight against another opponent to be determined followed by another $40 million for a rematch with Joshua in the fourth fight.

In addition, one of the sources said the first fight with Joshua was guaranteed to be in the United States with DAZN willing to have the second fight in Joshua's native United Kingdom, even though the time zone would put a live stream of the fight on in the late afternoon instead of closer to the preferred time of 11:30 p.m. ET, which is when most major fights go off for U.S. broadcasts.

Let’s all not forget that in 2018 Joshua himself also ducked Wilder for life changing money in a two fight deal that included a guaranteed rematch . $50 million for the first fight and $30 million for the rematch, the truth is they both ducked each other and Joshua doing so for considerably more money, both have admitted ducking each other however only Wilder gets pulled for it !

Maybe, but had he taken the deal he'd be 100 mill richer and he still would have gotten opportunities to make money. Even after the Fury defeats he got these two opportunities and reportedly got 8 milll for this fight with Zhang. Did he make 100 mill for the 3 fights with Fury, I don't think so, so instead of fighting Fury 3 times he could of made 100 mill for Breazele and two Joshua fights and be in the same position that he was after the Fury losses and fought Parker then Zhang.

Even without the Joshua pay day, Wilder has earned over $100 million in his boxing career taking into account all of his fights. He boasts that he has set himself, his family up and has invested his money wisely where he doesn't really need to fight anymore

It was Fury’s gain, Fury beat his legacy on beating a bum.

The first top heavyweight to fight Wilder exposes him

Wasn´t this the offer where Wilder´s side refused to show proof of funds?
It was really weird. "Sign the contract and then we will show you. Trust as bro". I remember the entire thing being done in bad faith.

Youre exactly right. The issue is athletes adjust to the lifestyle of being rich and famous. They (usually) forget all about their humble beginnings. There are exceptions, obviously, but its hard for pros to "return" to normalcy where $50k is decent money.

$1.5M in $VOO (which is safer w tons more price appreciation possibility) would net ~$22k (before taxes) which is almost $2k/month...or a near-free mortgage on a nice house. Not pro athlete nice but still

Precisely! It´s so easy to do.
There are plenty of stories about athletes and celebrities who actually listen to their accountants/money managers. And I love those stories.

But no, ESPN could make a weekly show out of "Going broke."

As I posted in the early hours on the British Forum...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Well Done to Barry Hearn uttering in 2016 the words "Nah, we'll let this fight (AJ v Wilder) marinate".

We'll never ever see this fight now thanks to this short sighted idiocy.

    "Cheers" Bazza.

    Wilder got "Big Banged".

This irritates me greatly. All of media really. ESPN and any of the mainstream news stations all focus and glamorize going broke and losing it all...as if that's the norm and that's what's supposed to happen. They NEVER highlight the people who do it "correctly" and retire w finances in order. When someone properly retires they almost always have to reduce their lifestyle but that's true of any/everybody. Even Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger live(d) modestly and those guys are/were worth hundreds of billions of dollars. When I day modestly I believe one of them drives a damn Kia!

Hopefully society learns to decorate that kind of retirement in place of the glorified crash and burn...

Let’s not do this again. Team AJ were offered 50 million and rejected it, they ducked wilder.

But I do wish wilder had fought AJ instead of fury, he would have knocked AJ out, AJ doesn’t have the chin or recovery powers that fury has
