Shouldn't the WBC be blamed for this? Or is Povetkin available for Wilder to negotiate with now?

    I haven't been following this.

He had to fight Stiverne if he wanted belt, that's the crux of it, really looks like if the choice is his (or his team) they go for soft opposition. If he defeated Povetkin it would silence the critics but everyone wants to see a more consistent and higher caliber of opponent for him going forward.

    It's simple economics.

Wilder & Co. have no reason to enter into negotiations ahead of the mandated time to fight Povetkin because to do so would be to not take advantage of his leverage as champion ... by which I mean, the champion gets 70 percent of the purse bid, and the Russians will put up way-over-market cash to win the bid -- giving Wilder the bigger payday.

He has to fight his mandatory, but in no case with ANY champion does he have to fight him ahead of the mandated time period.

That's why not make the fight next ... because he wouldn't be getting 70 percent of tens of millions of dollars that the Russians will put up.

Where is this level of criticism and scrutiny for Chagaev? He won his title almost a year ago and has made ZERO defenses. And now he's bystepping his mandatory (Lucas Browne, lol, since Tyson Fury is fighting Klitschko) to fight Pianeta.

What was stopping Chagaev from fighting Povetkin? Or Browne? Or, you know, anyone in the last year?

If any heavyweight titleholder is ducking a mandatory, you can start there.

^ but that's the point- Wilder's mandatory brings the most money. Lucas Browne doesn't do that for Chagaev. Wilder should make the Povetkin fight next. It's really simple.
Anyone remember Tommy Morrison turning down 8 million to fight Lennox Lewis because he wanted to defend against someone named Michael Bentt.

    You make the fight

Saintpat made a good point though, it would seem that he would make more money by waiting for the fight to go to purse bid.

tbh this might sound daft to most but wilder would not beat anthony joshua now let alone in a couple of years. i would happily put joshua in with wilder now after wilders fight on saturday.

Wilder should be stripped if he doesn't face Povetkin next.

Knowing Haymon, he'll gladly allow his coward titlist to drop it even though it is a career payday, then he'll have him fighting newly signed Eddie Chambers on Spike.:thumbsup

That's terrible management. You don't push away career high paydays you show imperative to go get them. You contact the WBC and tell them you want the negotiating period moved up. Both fighters are available. The WBC will do it, they postponed the Stiverne negotiating numerous times for team Wilder I'm sure they would happily move up for them. That actually benefits them. You don't push big money fights further away when they present themselves. Biz 101

So fighting Pianeta is the big-money fight for Chagaev? LOL

I never said that. But the disparity in money from fighting Browne and Pianeta is probably not that great. Not nearly as great as it is for Wilder vs Povetkin as opposed to any other opponent save Wlad for him. Lmao I don't understand why ppl can't see this!
You would let him leave ten million on the table against Povetkin and risk getting ko'd for 500k in some small back town gym. I wouldn't want that type of person to be my manager lol
