Considering Margarito made $1.2m against Cotto and he is a much more established name than Clottey (even beat him), if Clottey made more than $650k, it wasnt much more. And that fight was against Miguel Cotto, meaning it would automatically get a bigger purse than against Williams. The offer they made to Joshua was valid and fair in all honesty.
It's simple. Cotto is one of the biggest draws in the sport. HBO would have put up a bigger purse for Cotto/Clottey than they did for Pavlik/Williams; neither were PPV fights. It's sensible to believe that Clottey took about a million for that fight, and that's assuming the split was ~70/30.
So Goosen can't ask for a rematch clause on a short notice fight while he didn't want Pavlik to have a rematch clause in a fighter it wouldn't be a short notice? Ok i get it booradley. Yea 3 or 4 weeks until fight night is nothing right?
Go back to page 2 and read my post please boo...I think it got lost as the last post on the page. It will answer all this hypocrasy talk... :good
Goosen's hypocrisy knows no boundaries. He's demanding the very thing he objected to during Pavlik negotiations, and that has absolutley nothing to do with my opinion of rematch clauses.
I'm not saying it's a crap offer (though the purported "original offer" was). But it's certainly not the kind of offer that you'd have to be a big girl's blouse to decline, especially seeing as it was up a weight, at short notice and against, well, Paul Williams.

cmon MAN!... you just reaching now mosley made 4 mil against margarito pavlik & williams were splitting 4 mil margarito made 1 . 2 against cotto with a billion zillion mexican fans 650k is right on tap for someone like clottey... 0 fans, the challenger, less known than pw more than 800k would be a big ass stretch... especially seeing how i would be extremely surprised if williams was making more than 1.5....no matter who he fights its going to be on short ass notice, not that many people will be attending & hbo wont be putting up big money like that
This is all very logical, and mostly true. It does not change the fact that Goosen comes off looking very hypocrtical. He threw a fit over the other fight wanting the same thing he now demands for his fighter.
Again, Margarito, a much bigger name and bigger draw than Clottey got 1.2 and an 80/20 split. The Clottey fight was of smaller scale...and again, him being a lesser draw, there is no way he commanded a larger cut than Antonio did. Id be surprised if he brought in a million...honestly.
He is a promoter...they all are hypocrytes...lol. Again tho, its commonplace for the champ to want it and the challenger to fight it. Happens all the time in all honesty.
You're picking on a straw man here. I never said $650,000 was a low-ball offer. I'm saying it's not a career-high payday, and it's not so massive that Clottey would be ducking Pdub if he didn't take it.
fair enough.... i aint say he was ducking.... imo the dec 5th date needs to be scrapped all together... they rushing to put something together and it will just be a mess if they fight someone it should just be on the undercard of a bigger fight... and it should be someone that paul will destroy in like 3 or less rounds.... other wise sit the year out & enjoy the time with your family and they will get things rolling in 2010
