Team Williams: Biggest Hypocrits in Boxing!

Read my post again, it clearly explains why the more recognized champion in negotiations is the one who historically asks for a rematch clause, and the challengers have been known to historically fight it. That doesnt constitute a flip flop, it constitutes normal negotiations.

Think about it this way. Williams fights Margo, who didnt ask for a rematch clause because he had his eyes on bigger names...then loses tho and doesnt get an immediate rematch because of Paul's mandatory, Carlos Quintana. Paul does include a rematch clause and loses...but because of adding in the clause, Quintana is forced to fight Williams instead of another mandatory. Paul wins, only Quintana didnt want a rematch clause (which is also standard in rematches because of the fact of a chance in being locked into fighting the same guy for 2 years...not many fighters want to do that), so when he loses, Williams was free to find another opponent. He then moves up (after time) to fight the MW champ Kelly Pavlik. Kelly wants the rematch clause because if he loses he wants the big payday/shot at the title again (which is the smart way to go for a reigning champion as shown by the mistake of Margo in the past)...Paul, if he wins, wants to find his own opponent, bigger name, bigger threat...so he fights it.

This is standard negotiating and is the norm with champions/bigger names (if they are both champs) wanting the clause and the challengers wanting to fight it. Its been going on forever this way and is the rule, not the exception (the exception being Margo v Williams).

Again, not really hypocrasy...tho like I said, all promoters tread that fine line on a regular basis.

Quintana gave Williams a rematch, but Williams will not give Quintana a rematch.

When Margarito beat the blood out of Williams (blood everywhere) Williams refused to give Margarito a rematch. Williams depended on his judges to save his arse. Williams is a hypocrite.

 

In truth, and this is coming from a KP fan, Goosen is doing the right thing in both cases. You get as much as you can for your fighter at the bargaining table in terms of money, locale, rematch clauses in or out, gloves, ring size, every other damn thing.

YES, it is hypocritical, but you must argue your position for each fighter. If Goosen was promoting Martinez I would expect him to fight to keep the clause out.

Goosen ultimately surrendered to the clause demand vs Pav, but probably got concessions elsewhere, in negotiations, you don't simply give something up that someone wants because its the right thing to do, you give it up for something you want.

At the same time, we as boxing fans should be insulted when they try to talk to us about "fair" because its not about fair its about getting every dollar and advantage you can.

Martinez should take the fight even with the rematch clause if he is in shape. He can win the fight. Its short notice for both men. If he loses but performs well that exposure will help his career, not hurt it. PW will be having to come down to 54 not 60 and Martinez is no spring chicken.

My guess, and I haven't read up on it, is that there is another reason besides not wanting a rematch clause thing holding up Martinez. It could be something as simply wanting more time to prepare, maybe? But saying that wouldn't look good.

I laugh that PW insinuates that Pav ran. I guarantee you he does not believe that. Williams will get knocked out vs Pavlik. I'll bet very heavy. I do well when I bet heavy.

I think PW should campaign at 47 assuming he can be strong there and not drained. Fight an easy one now at 54 and head back down to 47.

Seriously down there he is a freaking giant. If he can get every fight on HBO he will force everyone's hand. Clottey, Cotto, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Saul Alvarez?, Berto? whoever floats to the top, he can be the new Tommy Hearns (well, they can sell him that way to the casual fan it will work on them).

Now he may lose, but there is a good chance he puts together a string of big wins.

If he fought Pavlik he would have been knocked out and humiliated in a one sided fight. He would have looked silly because he wouldn't know how to be the second strongest man in the ring.

The problem with these promoters is that they are as the saying goes "too greedy to be greedy"

Sometimes its better to let the other guy have a few bucks especially if you know you are going to kick his ass.

I'm telling you, if they were smart, they would head back down - and forget about 68 for a looooong time.
