Yeah that one's been told here and on every boxing forum before. And it was only funny the first time.

The media also criticized Jack Johnson, Carlos Monzon, Ali, Hector Camacho, Michael Nunn, etc. back then as well so what's your point? It's funny how you're trying to call me out as a revisionist because you think I'm singling out your favorite fighter but the truth is I actually follow the sport and not just one fighter.
Whitaker wasn't all that despised back then (perhaps maybe Mexican fans who supported JCC) and was considered the finest fighter of the 90's. The reason why I think Whitaker's style was entertaining to watch was because he actually pressed the action, threw punches in bunches (throwing 1000 punches) while maintaining his incredible defense, and stood in front of opponents and fought close without resorting to hugging and elbows. Sure he potshotted and "ran" from time to time but it wasn't to the extent that FMJ showed.
I just find it funny how you took offense of me preferring Whitaker's style over Mayweather.

Funny thing is you just described Floyd in the pocket, Whitaker was never as aggressive or in the pocket as Floyd, Floyd stands his ground a lot more authoritatively than Whitaker did during his career

Watch how Whitaker stand his ground up close. He's not constantly clinching and waiting for the ref to break them apart. I also recall Whitaker out fighting and out muscling Julio Cesar Chavez on the inside as well. My opinion still stands. If Whitaker were fighting today I don't think he would have this much hardcore fan base or detractors. I'm sure of that.
