Ive read from a lot of different articles that when watching a boxing match you should look for certain things so that you can learn new techniques from the fighters you are watching. any tips on what to look for when watching good fighters?

if you look at footwork it really makes a different on how you see each guy fight. I used to think they magically hit eachother by walking forward

There's a lot of things to look out for. Footwork is a good one as the previous poster mentioned.

I also like to observe how they set up a big punch, whether it's through footwork, feints, smaller punches or counters. The angle of approach.

Defensively, I like to observe someone's movement - in their ability to stay within their opponent's range without getting hit.

Overall, I like to think about my weaknesses, and see what the fighters do to overcome it.

I watch punch selection very closely and defense.

  5. Start with effective aggression, defense, ring generalship, clean hard punching then fitness, speed, finesse and technique, power, heart, punch resistance.

sometimes you will see someone pushing the action.. not because they want to.. but because they are being forced too.

  8. I say the guy pushing the action gets my respect, its definitely the second most important thing in a fight but pushing like a maniac isn't the same as controlling the fight.

Pernell Whitaker controlled the action without pressing. A great example of passive ring generalship.

As a beginner I would look for the things not relating to athletic ability such as footwork, how they deal with fundamental punches... Look at their pacing.

That's the problem with a lot of amateurs, atleast around my area. The focus seems to be mainly on the physical side of their game, getting them to throw as many fast punches as possible.

Because thats controllable.... If a coach knows very little he can just hammer the fitness side of things and a small percentage will discover the fundamentals on their own and be successful.

That happens a lot in my experience- its just a numbers game. The only time I've seen this not happen is when the coaching is that bad they actually make their fighters even worse. Then not even the numbers game works.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people getting excited over punches THROWN; not punches landed clean. There is a HUGE difference.. ****.. there is a HUGE difference in a glancing blow.. and one that landed square and clean.

Yep. Thing is, a lot of the conditioning work from said coaches is **** poor aswell

It's easy to tell a kid to keep his hands up and throw a lot of punches, yet you see plenty of coaches offering little more than that.
