Read a report that Lewis was giving Carpentier a going over in the first round (weighing only 150lbs) but that Carpentier snuck a punch in when Lewis was being reprimanded by the referee.

Anyone know what happened here? Would Lewis have had a chance? Personally I see Carpentier beating him down the stretch, but I don't have a massive knowledge of this fight and have not seen any footage of Lewis (I assume, like Greb it has all been lost/destroyed) so I can't really judge.

Thoughts, from the likes of McGrain/My2Sense/other knowledgable posters would be much appreciated:good

I have about 3 Ted Kid Lewis fights.

Yes even the Carpentier fight, This was more like Tyson Spinks, than Dempsey Firpo imo. For round 1.

There was no going over on Lewis's part.

In later years Lewis said that Carpentier held him in close and that he fired a punch after the referee had told them to break.
I think by this excellent print you can see there was some substance to this ,but Carpentier was ,as you say, probably too big for him.

I have seen a couple of his domestic fights he was know as the bashing ,dashing ,crashing, Kid,a name later bestowed on Terry Downes.
Lewis was jewish and his real name was Gershon Mendeloff .He was a minder for the Fascist leader Oswald Mosley, when the extent of Mosley's anti semitism became apparent to Lewis he knocked Mosley down and quit.

Seems like Lewis himself was throwing a left hook which Carpentier countered.

I think Lewis was too small but I also think it was kind of a cheap shot that floored Lewis. At this point Lewis was past his prime and Carpentier was a good 20 pounds heavier. The sad thing is that Jack Dempsey was ringside and had Lewis won it was hoped he would be matched with Dempsey in Europe. Now THAT would have been criminal.
