Just finished reading Ted Kid Lewis - His Life and Times by Morton Lewis (his son who is still alive at 102). A very solid and loving look at Lewis the fighter and the man. Up until his death in 1970 it was written that he was regarded as England's greatest living fighter. Was this author hyperbole?
No, pretty much on the money, The Kid was a truly exceptional fighter, fought from FW onto LH over the course of his career, and fought against the very best most of the time : Leonard, Britton, Carpienter, O,Dowd, to name a few, spoke to Morton a long time ago, seemed a nice guy, said that his dad rarely weighed 147 throughout his long tenure as a champion and contender, one American writer referred to Lewis as the " Iron Boned Britisher" sounds about right, well remember the front cover of Boxing News on the week he died, it showed just his face, but what a face ! if ever a face portrayed the profession of the subject, this one did.
Definitely a “pound for pound” great given the weight he spanned. Fought much bigger men than himself so often. In addition to which he had great longevity and he was neck and neck with Jack Britton for quite some time. I think if we don’t count Bob Fitzsimmons as an Englishman then it’s pretty clear that Lewis is still the greatest English fighter ever and would arguably be the second greatest Brit after Jimmy Wilde.
