Teddy Atlas “Canelo is Overrated” 2X Heavyweight Champion of the World Responds

I can't help saying the same words canelo used "I thought he knew about boxing". Really, I thought it. What a stupid statement!

 

When so called experts are calling him 'the greatest mexican fighter of all time. Then yes, I would say, at least, slightly overrated. I love Canelo's response though. That was hilarious.

 

I believe that interview was before the Charlo fight not after. Unless Atlas is repeating what he said before the Charlo fight. Atlas also mentioned that Canelo got alot of decisions that he probably shouldnt have gotten.i think he said that Lara beat Canelo and GGG actually beat him twice before losing to him at the age of 40. In my opinion Canelo is up there as one of the great Mexican fighters, even though i thought he lost to Trout, Lara, and GGG twice in spectacularly competitive bouts. Canelo defeated alot of excellent fighters and won titles in 4 weight divisions. His fights with Golovkin were classics, and i rate GGG as one of the middleweight greats as well.

 

I really started to pay attention to him after the Baldomir KO. He put a clinic on Beefy Smith. The Kirkland KO was nice but 100 percent served up as Canelo is a great counter puncher. Plant and Billy Joe were good wins. It's hard to say what his best performance is. Canelo has changed him style from a really good counter punch with good defense and punch selection to "load up on every punch" kinda guy. To be honest, I'd have to say his best performance was the showing in the second GGG fight. Canelo backed GGG up all night and initiated most fo the exchanges. Razor close decision and I was ok if the winner was either of them.

 

Dear Terrible Tim,
I think Teddy Atlas just dislikes Canelo because he is a Golovkin fan or as we call him “Lil g” or “lower case g”. Canelo is a great fighter and posterity will judge him as that. Sure I want to see him fight David Benaividez and it would be tough for both guys though I favour the Mexican monster Benaividez.
Remembering your career that right cross of yours was something to behold as well as those old school sleek skills. How would peak Terrible Tim Witherspoon have done against peak Iron Mike Tyson?

I know you were great friends and colleagues with the greatest African fighter of all time Uncle Azumah Nelson the boxing Professor himself.

 

There is only one TBE and he schooled Canelo.

Andre Ward is an ATG and he is no idiot that’s for sure. You need to look at the mirror son to see the definition of an idiot.

 

Depends what angle you look at it from.

You do not have to be the second coming to be the main cash cow in boxing, you just have to be marketable and very good, and Canelo is at least both of those.

I think he’s bordering great, as in he’s around the top in any era you put him in.

The simple fact that a slightly past prime GGG couldn’t completely dominate him is testament to how good Canelo is. And yes GGG won 1 & 2 but they weren’t mega dominations a la Crawford Spence

 

Ward so overrated I just don’t get it

 

Every time you say GGG is little g , you sound like a bitter idiot period. I personally don't care what you think of me. Ward probably only said it once, when he was annoyed, but you keep saying it to be disrespectful. Every time you mention Rocky Marciano, do you mention he couldn't carry Holmes jockstrap? Just because Holmes said it once when he was annoyed? If you did, it wouldn't suprise me.

 

He lost to Kovalev, who Canelo KO'd, who lost twice to GGG, who was 2 weights below Ward.

 

You might be right about his prowess as a trainer. He maybe overrates himself in that role?

Though, on the ability of fighters, the likely outcomes of matchups and when he's breaking down post-fight, Teddy Atlas does seem knowledgeable.

I think he's just tired of the hype-train carrying Canelo, and he regularly says as much.
I can't blame Canelo himself for being the face of boxing but I'm tired of the hype too.

That is not to say Canelo isn't a good fighter.

Somewhat overrated in recent years? Yes possibly.

 

Ward's resume is leagues better than GGG's.
