I saw on another site that Teddy Atlas invented a system for boxers, which he came up with as an amateur, while training himself ( !!!!) Since he was not much of an amateur, I figured this would be interesting, so I read on. It seems he is now taking credit for inventing the system that Cus D'Amato was known for--numbers for punches. When Jose Torres got title shot against Willy Pastrano back in old days, Cus and his method of giving punches and combinations numbers was publicized. Now Atlas says he invented it. Worst part---people will believe it.
Man I really like Atlas , I hope thats just been taken out of context. he havers a lot of pish but I really like him and Tessitore ( depsite the paedo beard ! )
i like teddy too but i don't know what to believe, the people who love him make him sound like a legend but those who hate him give a huge contrast in character, what is the story about him getting jumped by 7 dudes and being able to take them all out? in the playboy article on tyson he is accused of being really crazy by the catskill camp, as in someone they could not trust,
I missed that article, do you know what issue it was? He definatley can't be trusted, but he has some people convinced he's the most trustworthy person in boxing. (Although considering the people in boxing, that's not bragging) I gotta see that article. If you have a link can you put it up? As for the claim he invented that numbered punching system, it will probably work out like past claims of his. Example: He had friends in media saying he was New York City Golden Gloves Champ. He wasn't. He never said a thing in response, but had friends say he meant another New York Tournament (one with no real competition) H emay do same here. If story holds up, he takes credit. If not, him or friends say writer got it wrong. Second example: After Cus died, People magazine had an article on Tyson and Cus. Teddy told writer Cus was a Homo. Article came out, people were pissed, including ones who had stuck by him or that he still needed to get ahead. He swore writer twisted his words around. That article may be available at library, for those who have access to library with old magazine articles on microfiche, or whatever they use nowadays.
In the recent Playboy article Atlas also claims that both Jimmy Jacobs and Cus were homosexual and that Jacobs died of AIDS. So, it looks like the People Magazine writer did not twist Teddy's words if he is still talking about it today.
If he thinks you'd buy it, Teddy Atlas would tell you that he stopped the vietnam war singlehandedly behind a good jab and a nice right hook. Teddy Atlas is a fun guy to watch but I don't think there's a bigger BS artist in the WORLD than Teddy.
Rico, is it same article Mario is mentioning? Can you tell me the month of issue. Also, why are you guys buying Playboy, and actually reading the articles?? Sorry, had to say that. :yep
I just looked some of it up on google. Not the playboy article, but the rumors it is starting. ****, Cus is dead 25 plus years, Jacobs too. These guys got Atlas out of doing jail time (He was in Riker's Island facing a jail stint when he first contacted them thhrough Rooney.) In mid 1980's Atlas was telling a few people in Gleason's that Tyson was ***/womanizer/******/snitch/crook...you name it, he started rumours. Then some of the guys in gym made him stop---Atlas backed down. He tried to start one rumor so ****ed up I won't mention it, cause it will just spread if I do. It dies then, was untrue, let it stay dead. It was about Tyson, who Atlas is obseessed with. Meanwhile, anyone see article claiming he invented that number/punching system?
Yes it was 2 issues ago so it was probably the February issue. They interviewed Rooney, Jose Torres, Atlas, Steve Lott, Jay Bright, and a couple of other people I have never heard of that were around the D'Amato house that they all lived in the early days. Basically everyone said Atlas was a shady POS and Atlas said that he thought D'Amato and Jim Jacobs were gay lovers because they lived in an apartment in NY together for years. That is when he said he believes Jacobs died of AIDS. It was a great article and you could probably find a copy online somewhere.
I've never read that article but I've heard those rumors about Jacobs and D'Amato on the internet, back when secondsout had a forum. Anyway, Atlas is full of it. It's humorous to me how people act like he's some great trainer when the track record proves otherwise. Even Aaron "Condom on the Eye" Snowell did more as a pro trainer than Atlas.
it was the playboy issue with adriana curry on the cover, it was 2 or 3 issues ago, rico said it best bout what it said, he seems like he knows the sport as far as training people but he is still a shady cat, he seems like the kind of dude that would do anything to get back at someone, at any cost
i didnt understand why he dumped briggs cuz of his loss to darroll wilson, i thought that was pretty harsh to dump your fighter cuz he lost a bout and said he had an asthma attack, i'm sure briggs was tellin the truth, he wasn't mentally ready for a fighter like wilson just yet, and panicked when he couldn't get him out of there with ease, i remember him bitching out moorer against holyfield, tellin him not to come back to the corner if he didn't follow his orders
I didn't see the article, but as a kid I fought in the same area as Teddy Atlas. While I never saw him fight in person he did stop one of the toughest kids in my club. I don't know what his record was, but his rep back than was that he was a pretty good fighter. Tough and a decent puncher.
