He absolutely isn't top 5.

JCC, MAB/EM/JMM, Finito and Chava still loom over him. After that it's negotiable.

 

Teddy Atlas is not a top 1000 boxing commentator/analyst of all time.

He's in the bottom 1% of the bottom 1%.

Miguel Canto is my #2 all time at Fly, I can see him above all but JCC.

 

atlas is brain damaged. just ignore his opinion on anything.

Canelo has no signature wins

Loves feasting on washed hobo's.

 

Olivares and Canto belong firmly in the top 5 along with JCC and Chava, I think.

 

Clearly he shouldn’t be considered for numerous reasons : PED’s, stacked decks, ultra careful matchmaking, caneloweight shenanigans, are just some examples.

 

That's a fair top 5. Zarate arguably a more serious challenger to it than Barrera, Morales, JMM or Canelo.

 

Whether Canelo makes your top ten or not, Atlas' comment is part of a continued push-back against unearned praise i.e. Canelo is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time. The more time passes the more history will sneer at such hyperbole. Canelo's dominance is in direction proportion to quality of opposition. It is observable in film and official results.

If we pardon a forty year old Golovkin - and agree that his best opponents are a mid-thirties Gennady, Mayweather, Bivol, and Lara - then we may uncontroversially state he's failed to post a clear victory over any one of them.

Now his ability to hang at the world level, at different weight classes, over such a stretch is impressive. It is a testament to a talented, dedicated profressional. Nothing more, nothing less. And there's the fine line between the excellent and the truly special. Canelo's never wowed me like El Púas, Mr Pulmones, El Gran Campeon or El Terrible, and my eyes weren't deceiving me.

Canelo is not a top 10 Mexican fighter. I wouldn't say that he is getting old but I would say that he is getting disinterested- he has been fighting his whole life, has accomplished many things, and has found many ways outside of boxing to make money.

 

Canelo is way greater than Finito. Juan Francisco Estrada is probably greater than Canelo, though.
