Teddy Atlas claims it was Tyson who spoiled the Bonecrusher and Tucker fights.

Teddy Atlas said "People thought Tyson was this guy who was sure of himself, a leader, when in fact he's a follower. Tyson was a guy who was very unsure of himself in a lot of ways. In some fights he didn't look good in, with Bonecrusher and Tucker, he would put his hand behind guys, because he didn't want to fight inside, and the other guy would grab his hands because he didn't want to fight inside either - the guy would make that sort of a treaty, and Tyson was obviously the one in charge of initiating the agreement. So he wasn't always consistent, he wasn't always sure of himself, so he'd look for a free ride, a easier way. So in those fights that weren't exciting, the other guy got the blame because people assumed Tyson was the guy who wanted to fight all the time."

Do you agree with Teddy Atlas on his points made? I have watched those fights a lot, and what i saw was Bonecrusher and Tucker initiating the clinches aprox 90% of the time, and Tyson would often comply. It was rare that Tyson started the clinches against those men. To pretend Tyson was initiating the clinches against those boxers and was happy to be very excessively hugged all fight long, would be to forget Tyson headbutting and elbowing Bonecrusher in the clinches, and punching him on the break. Teddy probably says Tyson initiated the clinches in rounds 3-5 when he fought Thomas, but again he was not starting the hugging and he was headbutting and elbowing Pinklon, to punish him for very excessive clinching.

Meh. Think it's more Teddy being Teddy, but it's true Tyson despite popular bellief wasn't an incredibly skilled inside fighter. Great at getting there, only serviceable once he did though.

More of the clinches were initiated by Tucker/Ruddock, it was more of an acquiesceance by Tyson to go with it though.

Atlas is a douche bag when it comes to Tyson. You only have to look at the scorecards to see whats what. People criticize Tyson for winning one sidedly which is pretty funny.

Here is what legendary matchmaker Johnny Bos had to say about Mike Tyson as well as former manager Steve Lott.

    Bos-
For three years, through 1987, 1988 and 1989, Mike Tyson was the greatest heavyweight who ever lived. He was completely unbeatable and everybody was completely terrified of him. For three years, no other heavyweight before or since could compare to Mike Tyson.

    Bos on the Bonecrusher fight

BONECRUSHER SCORECARDS-referee: Mills Lane | judge: Lou Tabat 120-106 | judge: Dalby Shirley 119-107 | judge: Jose Juan Guerra 119-107
TRANSLATES TO 12-0 ,11-1.11-1 -------NOW OUTSIDE OF THE PUNCH SMITH LANDED IN THE 12TH WHAT TROUBLE DID HE HAVE?

    Bos on the Tucker fight
referee: Mills Lane | judge: Julio Roldan 118-113 | judge: Phil Newman 119-111 | judge: Bill Graham 117-112
THATS THE TUCKER FIGHT SCORECARD 10-2,11-1,8-3-1

    Bos on the Tillis fight
TILLIS WAS THE TOUGHIE AND THAT WAS 15 MONTHS AFTER HE TURNED PRO --------TODAY GUYS ARE STILL FIGHTING 4 RD FIGHTS AFTER THEY TURN PRO

    Bos on the Holmes fight
YOU CAN SAY HOLMES WAS SHOT BUT HE FOUGHT ON 14 YRS AFTER THIS AND IT NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN NOR HAD IT EVER HAPPENED BEFORE
ONE THING IN BOXING YOU CANT CHANGE IS A CHIN,AND HOLMES WAS OUT. I LOOK AT FIGHTS ON STYLES AND TYSON HAD THE STYLE TO GET UNDERNEATH LARRYS JAB I WONDER IF FRAZIER COULD HAVE DONE THE SAME THING?

    Steve Lott (former Tyson manager)

The funniest analogy I always hear is Mike had trouble with Tillis, Green, Smith, and Tucker. All Mike did was win almost every m...inute of every round.

The guys who say that forget:
When Jack Johnson had trouble he was dropped by 165 pound Ketchel

When Dempsey had trouble he was staggered by Carpentier and Firpo (Firpo!)

When Louis had trouble he was dropped by Jimmy Braddock and Tony Galento ( Galento!)

When Marciano had trouble he was dropped by 185 pound Joe Walcott and 185 pound Archie Moore ( what was Moore at that time 45 years old?)

When Ali had trouble he was dropped by Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper and chased out of the ring by 175 pound Doug Jones. Oh, I forgot, he looked great running away from Ernie Terrell for 15 rounds.

    Bos-
NO FIGHTER IN HEAVYWEIGHT HISTORY WAS EVER BROUGHT ALONG AS FAST AS TYSON ,IM NOT SAYING TYSON WAS THE BEST HEAVYWEIGHT IN HISTORY IM SAYING FOR 3 YEARS HE WAS.

I think Tyson was a pretty skilled inside fighter make no mistake about it. He was also a lazy inside fighter and that for some reason gets misconstrued as lacking ability.

Teddy is again being Teddy. His bitterness has endured for years and years. When it comes to Tyson I have a don't take him seriously when he talks about Tyson because he seldom has anything good to say about him.

Tyson had the physical template to be another Frazier on the inside, yet was inferior to the 6'5" Bowe in this aspect of his fighting.

However, with respect to Smith, the first nine rounds of Bonecrusher's match with Bruno should be viewed before convicting Tyson of the charges Atlas is making there. The main difference in the outcome of those two bouts is that James unloaded early enough in round ten to take out Frank, while he only uncorked at the tail end of round 12 on Mike (but did clearly rock Tyson when he finally connected).

Atlas and Tyson as a team would have been fun with all the mental issues between them. Throw in King as the promoter, and the sporting press has wet dreams over the possibilities.

Teddy is the most bitter ****er when it comes to Tyson. It must suck knowing that the only reason people listen to anything you say is because you briefly trained Tyson when he was a child.

Anything Atlas says regarding Tyson has to be taken with a grain of salt. Also, he pounds on these issues of being unsure of oneself and confidence so much it makes me wonder how much of that might be him projecting his own experiences and feelings onto others.

That said, I do have to say that Tyson was an incredibly lazy inside fighter, and even at his peak would often stand there with his hands free and his opponents open and not try to take advantage.

He complied, but didn't initiate. I think there's a point to Teddy's comment. He just takes it to hyperbolic levels.

Do you think Atlas is so bitter because he personally believes he made Tyson and got shafted?

of course he is. Hes a complete egomanaic. In his mind, Tyson wouldnt have won the title if it wasnt for him. Thats the way he thinks.

But if he was Tyson's main trainer for those early years, doesn't he sort of have a point? I mean he is a jerk still obviously

How would you rate Atlas as a trainer LH?

Even Frazier wasn't crazy enough to get physically aggressive with Foreman outside the ring. Only Ali and Atlas pulled **** like this on George from what I recall. If 55 year old psychopath Bruce Curry ever decided to attempt a comeback, Atlas should be the maniac to train him for it. :nut:silly:ldevil:nutcase:iak

No Cus D' Amato was alive during that time. Atlas was his assistant and held the pads and did in the in ring work. He was sent to the amatuer fights with Tyson to work his corner.
Kevin Rooney took over what Atlas was doing under the guidance of Cus too. Cus D Amato was responsible for making Mike Tyson into what he became, because it was as much of a mental programming as it was becoming a fighter.

Atlas was not Cus D Amato nor was he a professional fighter so he never had the same bond with Tyson that Rooney did. Rooney was a tough son of a gun as a fighter and Tyson respected him and they were close.

Atlas tries to be what Cus was for fighters. He tries to break them down mentally and rebuild their character, but hes been for the most part unsuccessful.

I think he knows boxing, and like Cus and Kevin, hes a no BS kind of guy, but I think he takes the mental part over the top and it works against most fighters. If you talk to guys like Moorer and Grant they will tell you Atlas made them unsure of themselves, and you can see it in their style. Moorer went from an offensive beast to a tenative counterpuncher. Grant just fell apart. Look what hes doing with Povetkin, hes a mess too.

Atlas is better served behind the mic as a commentator where his over sensitive over the top passion works well.
