Who the hell is saying this is the best heavyweight fight ever? It's not even close. Lol at saying Foreman/Lyle was in the 80's.
The hate is strong with this one. Atlas is a hateful moron, I never listen to him. And while I wouldn't call it the single greatest fight ever, I've been watching atg hw reruns since then, and it compares very favorably.
This is kind of a weird fact. I was looking at the Ring Fight of the Year list and nobody bigger than a welterweight has won in over 20 years. For heavyweight fights, 2 Holyfield matches won in the 90s, no heavyweight fights won in the 80s, but heavyweights won 7 years of the 70s (Ali/Foreman), 4 times in the 60s (Ali, Frazier, Patterson), 4 times in the 50s (Marciano, Walcott, Charles), once in the 40s (Louis), 6 times in the 30s (Louis, Schmeling, Baer), and 4 times in the 20s (Dempsey, Schmeling).
It was a good fight, but the first 4 rounds were snoozers, as well as 9-10. A couple of HW fights that come to mind I would easily rank over this one are: Holmes/Norton Foreman/Lyle Ali/Frazier I & III Bowe/Holyfield I Tua/Ibeabuchi Ali/Norton I Lewis/Mercer
The thing is, these guys are really super heavyweights. They are tremendously athletic for men of their stature, but no where near the skill level of a great smaller fighters, who don't have a huge size and power advantages over another fighter at their weight. Was this fought on the same level of intelligence as Lewis-Holyfield, or Ali-Frazier? Definitely not. Not even close. It was far more amateurish in every way. BUT it was exciting if you like a display of KO power and heart. If you're watching to see a great technical encounter, best not watch heavyweight boxing in 2017.
Actually he makes little sense. Lyle vs foreman was no where near the talent that Joshua and klitchko displayed. If anything it resembles Lewis vs Vitali ,two lumbering fighters desperatley trying to k.o one another but staying in the center of the ring pushing each other back and forth and at times hovering against the ropes from exhaustion going shot for shot ina sense .They were both tired and not really fit enough to display what we saw last saturday bc they BOTH took the fight on two weeks notice...not comparable in quality but still better than foreman /Lyle minus the knock downs. You rarley see skills on dispaly with Klitchko vs Joshua when two punchers are involved and one has only 18 fights the other is 41. It was also a title fight in front of 90,000 fans, not sure what Teddie drank before this one but this was a quality fight not a toughman looking one in which foreman and lyle resembles after 2 rnds. Hes simply just being Nostalgic Nut Atlas here! Breazeale vs Izu was better than foreman vs lyle too if not as good......
I understand what Teddy Atlas was trying to say and he is right (Holyfield vs bowe) but the way he said it made him look like a nostalgia ***** downer
He isn't saying it wasn't a great fight , more pointing out that people are going over board cos there hasn't been many good HW fight in about 10 years. Its still a great fight.
