He mainly did it to get the attention off of Moorer, who was being mentally destroyed by George. If I remember right, Atlas just got in George's face and maybe nudged his shoulder a bit.

I'd take anything Atlas said with a big bucketfull of salt. Just listen to his commentary on Diaz-Marquez he couldn't call a fight if it was on autodial

Wow...that's actually very respectable and brave of him as a trainer looking after his fighter like that! I guess him refusing to let Moorer have water for a round or whatever as punishment did have good reason / intention behind it.

Point well taken. I guess I am focusing too much on the outside the Ring behavior when I speak of lack of discipline when some people are speaking of discipline/guidance 'inside' the ring.

''Maybe' Cus & Rooney could have gotten different outcomes in difficult fights ,but outside the ring Tyson probably wasn't going to be stopped from self destructon. According to Atlas, Cus was like a doting parent when it came to Tyson & was fairly permissive with him when he was a boy.

This story is true and it is well-presented.

Teddy Atlas is a man and has his faults. He's loyal to the end and his kind are becoming less familiar in this country... to our detriment.

Jay Bright oversaw the rapid deterioration of Tyson's skills. Teddy Atlas was instrumental in building those skills.

    -Enough said.

the author seems to gloat over d' amato's death. that reeks of bias.

I wouldn't say "gloats". He takes a bit of poetic license. I'll amend my original post... it's generally true and well-written.

Tyson was definately 16 years old when that incident happened, as Atlas was still with him in June of 1982 when Tyson was winning the National Junior Olympics over Kelton Brown (youtube has video of it with Atlas celebrating afterwards), which is a fight that took place just a few short days before Tyson's 16th birthday.

In their respective bios on Tyson, both Peter Heller and Reg Gutterdige write of the incident happening in late 1982 with Heller being specific to it happening in November of that year.

Both Heller and Gutteridge write that the girl was 12 years old at the time of the incident.

    Nice work 'Detective' Sam.

Not a pleasant business by anyone's estimations, and pretty typical of Tyson's later behaviour towards women.

I'll explain, without the misinformation. Cus D'Amato got Teddy Atlas out of jail, after Atlas called Rooney from Riker's Island, who was boxing for D'Amato upstate. D'Amato went in fornt of judge for Atlas, and got him realesed to him. Atlas boxed briefly, then quit, claiming back problems. Atla scaused problems, had fights in bars, with others in camp, D'Amato stuck with him.
Cus tried to make Atlas a trainer. He let Teddy HELP----not train but help him with Tyson. Atlas ****ed that up, when on a trip to amateur tournament, he put ideas inTyson's head about D'amato. Rooney, and everyone else hating him. If you saw documentary where Tyson cries before fight, and Atlas consoles him, that's it. Teddy manipulated that to fit his needs, like he has always done.

When back in New York (Catskills) Tyson told Cus, Teddy said Tyson was liar. Atlas was mad abou tTYson every day, then one day whle walking pushed him into alley, put gun to Tyson's head, and fired off a shot. Teddy was 26 years old, Tyson 15. D'Amato kicked Teddy out, and did not press charges.

For years after Atlas bragged about it. Then Tysn got famous, and Atlas changed story, claiming it was over Tyson' s classmate, a girl, (Atlas's sister--or wife's sister, or cousin, depending on what version Teddy gives)

Atlas hates Tyson, and most others who he had contact with. The more succes they have, the more he hates them. Remember, he admits to almost shooting Donny LaLonde after LaLonde dumped him, and got another trainer.

So no matter what Tyson did in ring, Atlas claims oppenents were scared, cowardly, or when Larry Holmes is next to Atlas, as he was on show you mention, age is reason Tyson won.

Atlas hate Ricardo Salazar, a former amateur he trained--they fought at press conference for Michael Moorer-Holyfeild 2. Teddy also put down Moorer many times, behind his back, telling people Moorer was secret coward. I could add more, but won't. Teddy is a piece of ****, and a wickedly vicious liar.

    Aside from that, he's ok.

Both Heller and Gutteridge got info from their friend Atlas, of course they say girl was 12.

Tyson was 15 in video you mention-it was junior olympics--15 is age limit. You can't be 16 and compete. Tyson was not 16, and Atlas was behind Rooney and D'Amato in training Tyson. Cus let Teddy take that trip, trusted him, and got ****ed. Don't forget, Atlas said Cus was *** too, in last years Playboy interview about Tyson. Teddy made same claim back when Cus died, in People magazine, but backed off, and said author of that article misquoted him. With most who knew Cus now gone, he was not afraid to say it in Playboy last year. Cus should have left him in Rikers.

I don't blame Atlas for pulling a gun on Tyson.

People say, "well Tyson was only 15 or 16 years old". Tyson was a huge 15-16 year old who was bred like a pitbull, to be like a killing machine in the ring.

I'm far from an Atlas fan. I think he's one of the most overrated trainers ever (his role in his one shining moment is blown out of proportion anyway), he's a hypocrite with some of his "boxing is so bad with these mismatch" antics on ESPN (why where was this rage when YOUR fighter was given softies Teddy?), but in this incident, I don't find fault with what he did.

What was he supposed to do? Let Tyson get away from more **** and then Cus lets it slide again because Mike was so talented?

Tyson was born on June 30th, 1966 and the Kelton Brown fight took place on June 26th, 1982.

Tyson was still technically 15 years old at the time, but the Tyson we see celebrating with Atlas in the corner after the fight was only a mere four days away from turning 16.
