I agree here, and think Duran is a little over rated outside the light weight division. Duran fans are quick to dismiss that he was Ko'd early by one big punch ( Hearns ), quit without injury ( Leonard ), and won the light weight title ( Buchanan ) in the lead with a low blow shot. There was no re-match for Buchanan. Duran clearly had problems with Benitez's defense ( Lost ), and was upset by Laing and Sims.
Buchanan was losing anyway. He was erratic in his 30s outside of the LW divison. In addition to what you described, he also managed one of the greatest single wins in boxing history over Leonard, gave a remarkable effort against Hagler, destroyed Davey Moore, beat Palomino, beat Barkley..etc. It is what it is, you have to accept that boxing is complicated, and that an aging fighter gaining a considerable amount of weight no matter how great may become inconsistent. And it's hard to knock Duran for losing some of these fights.
Teddy Atlas, loves hearing his own voice. He is cringe worthy at times in being self righteous. A my way or the highway guy...but without the results. He seems to forget that it's about the fighter. I think that Wlad would smash Lindell Holmes as well.
Lol at your reply. One wonders why Povetkin who Atlas trained and others could not capitalize on this. By the way Atals wasn't kind to Povetkin in the Olympics.
I do agree that Wlad does lack mentally. I really don't see him doing well against say Lewis, Foreman, or even a prime Bowe who'd be big enough to get to him and make the fight uncomfortable for him. Even against Povetkin it was clear Wlad was very worried about getting in any sort of exchange with him and held excessively to the point he should've been penalized and had it continued DQ'd. The thing though with Wlad which makes me feel he would beat or have a good chance of beating a number of the greats is that not only is he a very technically sound atheletic big man with tremondous power but he knows how to use his size that guys aren't able to get to him and test his weak chin or reserve at least not before he gets to them. It wouldn't surprise me to see Wlad be able to give smaller heavyweights like Holyfield, Tyson, Louis even Ali or Holmes lots of trouble because he'd be able to utilize his physical advantages and stay away from them. That being said I could see all four of those guys mentioned in the end finding a way to beat Wlad. I really don't feel Wlad has a champions reserve I don't want to say heart. I feel when Wlad is made uncomfortable or hurt he can't help but panic he loses his composure which may be his demise against passed greats.W hat he does have is the god given physical talent to be a great champ along with the ring smarts and skills.
that was a good post, I agree with most of what you said, other than one thing, I don't think its a sure thing that all 4 would find a way to get to him, its possible that they do but its also possible that not all 4 do :think So hard to call :bbb
